“I need you to behave yourself.” It’s a good opportunity for Higgs to stir trouble, if he so desires. Sam has been slightly more lenient as of late, but he isn’t afraid to tug the leash tight again. “They don’t know about any of this.”
He’s vague on purpose. It’s hard to distinguish what exactly this is, but neither he nor Higgs have ever had much interest in defining it. It was probably better left that way. Sam flicks a night light on to see Higgs’s face properly, met with something startlingly aloof.

She reached out as far as she could, applying more pressure with her torso and knees, which served as support.
Heat radiated from Riche’s skin, and the mere sensation emboldened Coco enough to reach for her quickly and pull her as if her life depended on it. Riche was pulled away, sliding to a safer spot than Coco’s current position by sheer momentum.
When she looked back, three pairs of stunned eyes watched her in silence. Their expressions hovered in a limbo between anxiety and fear, unsure of how to react to what they had just witnessed.
Still, Coco… She had done it! She had saved her friend from danger! She can finally do something! She—!
“COCO!”The ice finally gave way beneath her feet.

Summary
When Harry's job takes him to a crime scene with the body of a young boy who looks just like Cuno, his despair over the state of the world sets in again, and he starts to drink more and more. But Kim - his new partner - cannot lose someone he cares about again. He is determined to show Harry what it truly means to have a purpose.
With obvious expertise, Kim walks Harry through the immediately diagnosable faults with the car. For starters, she’s missing both her engine and battery, and her interior has been thoroughly picked clean of anything valuable, leaving her riddled with empty wounds where a radio or mileometer would be. Her paint is scratched, presumably from minor crashes or general damage at the scrapyard. Her windows are smashed, and one of her doors has such a large dent by the handle that it won’t close fully.
If she were Harry’s car, he’d probably leave her running with the unit door closed and let her pass away peacefully. But Kim’s hands are all over her, pointing out her every flaw like a surgeon determined to save her life.

“Do now,” Wolfwood laughs. “Did always. When you don’t get enough water. Like any other plant.” His lip curls with amusement, and he leans in closer. Vash can’t help but stretch his eyes open as far as they’ll go, greedy for the way Wolfwood’s irises sparkle. He’s so pretty. Vash’s tongue is so heavy, or he’d say as much too. “But you’re probably right. Ain’t used to be that easy for you. But you’re just as vulnerable as any human without most of your powers.”
Used to be… without most of… Vash’s gaze flickers up towards the bits of hair that fall into his eyes. Charcoal black and coarser than it used to be, all flattened and soggy, probably with sweat. Just like Rem’s—or Wolfwood’s—and Vash looks back at the man leaning over him and feels that terrible, painful twinge in his chest a second time over.
Why? Vash’s hand scrabbles against his throat, to clear his airway, and then when that doesn’t work, falls to the chain around his neck. The familiar weight of a hand-carved cross, the one he corpse robbed from the love of his life—right.

As if the efforts of survival have not been inscribed along her very skin.

They stare at a fire which burns without ceasing—at skeleton fragments and glass shards and a spoon, warped and curled in on itself. There are flames in Ellie’s throat. There is poison in her body. The pages of a Bible have long since burned away—like they were never intended to be permanent. Not like loss. Not like grief. Not like loneliness.
Or: Ellie and Joel don't find each other until after she's already burned Silver Lake, and all of its residents, to the ground.

He wouldn’t reach out, but he liked entertaining the thought that he could, wondering if Vash’s hand would be smooth against his own, if it would be warm or cold.
He wanted to look, just look –but he couldn’t open his eyes.
After being kidnapped by bounty hunters and stranded in the desert, Wolfwood, Vash, and Meryl are left to rely on each other.

Leon can feel his heartbeat hammering at his ribs. A fox hellbent on gnawing off its leg to break free.
He knew what fear felt like. He’d grown up with it lurking in sewers and alleyways, protecting him– changing him. In this concrete box, with a stethoscope to his chest, he realizes just how helpless he feels.

Not that he’s really thought about that. They haven’t talked about what they’re going to do after this; they haven’t talked about much of anything at all. Meryl fought tooth and nail when she realised Wolfwood was taking them both away from the heart of the conflict. She stopped fighting about a mile out, when the impact of the great blast finally hit them, a sonic boom so loud they felt it down to the soles of their feet. From there, it was back to the ruins with the hopes of finding the man who brought them together in the first place, but that had been a largely silent endeavour. Unsuccessful, too.
They found Vash’s jacket, eventually, buried under a piece of rubble, somehow untorn despite the damage it had endured. No wonder Vash could live so recklessly. His coat was bulletproof. Didn’t mean a whole lot when he’d probably been vaporised while wearing it, but the coat itself was a neat relic. Wolfwood had handed it off to Meryl with the implicit request that she not take it out in front of him; he doesn’t really deserve to look at it.
Since, Meryl hasn’t spoken. It’s uncharacteristic of her.
