“Do you miss your mom?” Niko asks, and Edwin stiffens like he wasn’t expecting the question. Niko wasn’t really expecting to ask it, either, but it felt easier than rereading the letter, and she may be being brave but she can take baby steps to get there. It’s scary, and everyone should be proud that she isn’t just ignoring the topic of mothers altogether.
Edwin reaches forward, carefully pressing the spacebar of the computer to pause the episode. Scooby Doo is left frozen on the screen, eyes wide in comical confusion, and Niko smiles a little. Edwin’s voice is quiet and measured when he speaks, not looking at her. “I have been dead longer than I was ever alive.”
“That doesn’t mean you can’t miss her.”

The throne room was silent, which was unusual on a Tuesday afternoon since that was when the Round Table had their weekly meeting. Today, however, Arthur had dismissed his knights early, as there was no current crisis to manage or tricky problem for them to pick through, and it was a lovely day outside. He only had a few more reports to read before he put down his work for the day himself and spent the rest of his evening with his family. Merlin had no pressing matters to deal with today and was instead somewhere in the castle, playing with their daughter. Arthur intended to join them as soon as possible.
As if Arthur’s thoughts had summoned him, Merlin burst through the doors. Arthur smiled at him, dropping the reports and standing, happy to have the excuse to give up on his duties early. "Merlin, I was just thinking -"
“I lost Clara!”
Merlin loses their daughter during a game of hide and seek, and he and Arthur have to figure out why she's so hard to find.

“Oh!” Niko’s eyes are wide for a moment, because she knows that she is friends with Charles, she is friends with lots of people, and she is especially friends with Crystal and Edwin which would make her friends with Charles by virtue of the transitive property. She hadn’t quite realized that they were friends who go out of their way to check in on each other, but she doesn’t mind it at all. “We definitely are.”

There is something said about the concept of hindsight, only that Edwin isn’t sure if it’s something good, per se.
Because now that he knows what he feels for Charles, it’s like his brain is working overtime just to make sure that he is, in fact, in love with Charles, which is slightly ridiculous, since it only takes a single look for Edwin to confirm it again and again and again. It’s the way his heart flutters, his eyes get stuck on one of Charles’ features, his fingertips aching for the warm buzz touching Charles grants him.
And yet, in those quiet moments between cases, or sometimes deep at night when they are both busy with their own research, Edwin’s mind wanders through the three decades they have known each other, searching and finding those moments in which Edwin could have known he was in love with Charles, had he ever allowed himself to consider the possibility.Edwin goes down a trip down memory lane, and Charles needs someone to spell it out to him that he is in love.

The idea is so horrifying that it stuns Charles into silence for a couple seconds. “I didn’t know that. Why didn’t I know that?”
Edwin’s shoulders tense. “The whole thing is bloody tragic enough as it is.”
Grabbing his wrist, Charles begins marching them back in the direction of the pond they used to get here.
Edwin doesn’t resist, but he does argue, because of course he does. “Charles, where are we going?”
“St. Hilarion’s. We’ve got a new case, don’t we?”
