After Uther couldn't take the mantle (or crown) of the king again, Arthur took the reins as regent. Which was fine, because no one could challenge the appointment of peasants to the rank of knight, and therefore Lancelot couldn't walk away again, as he was surely rather foolishly planning to do.

Though he's wondering how he's supposed to concentrate on them when Merlin and Leon both look exhausted, and his new knights are quietly rebelling at the early morning wake up call.
He's still not quite sure how Gwaine managed to get out of it all...

His whole body comes apart with a joyous, furious snap and he is the dark clouds broiling overhead, he is the dancing twist of a power he does not know the name of - is it magic?- that builds and thrums and races from cloud to cloud and then snaps downwards in a glorious lick of lightning. Merlin laughs with booming thunder and reaches out, tickles each of Morgana’s men with himself just lightly. They fall one by one without the time to cry out, this one’s heart stopped in an instant, this one’s eyes smoked and blackened, this one’s lungs popped with the pressure.

Okay this is really silly but was so fun and I think kind of lovely? Based on this post on instagram, with a quote from a book that says that Merlin could “then become a cloud, storm, of even a ripple on a pond.”

Arthur was at his wits' end when he caught Merlin walking out of the tavern, which led him to make a horrible mistake, one that proved to be the last straw for Merlin, who decided there was nothing else to do but publically quit his job and leave Camelot in a huff.
Arthur never realized how much Merlin did for him-- or for Guinevere-- until he was gone; neither he nor his wife realized just how integral Merlin was to Camelot... and to their marriage.

Gaius dropped a half-finished potion, turned several fascinating shades of red and pink before moving on to near-purple, and yelled at Merlin for being irreparably foolish for quite a long while before Merlin was able to get a word in edgewise and was allowed to tell him anything more about the afternoon.
