Summary
Six months after Gabriel Reyes’ death, TK grows concerned about Carlos’ drinking and brings him to a meeting at the Y. Afterwards, over omelets at the diner, the husbands open up to each other. TK reflects on meeting Carlos after years of addiction and self-destruction, while Carlos has continued to seek closure by uncovering two unknowns: The identity of his father’s killer, and how his father truly felt about Carlos as his son.

Summary
The past becomes a thunderous echo when TK misses his mom’s funeral after his plane makes an emergency landing, while Carlos spirals thinking he’ll never see TK again. Safe on the ground, TK and Carlos hold each other up as they face the day’s trauma and begin a future that is somehow even more crowded with love.
Carlos bounces out of the hanger coltishly, his limbs loose as jelly, heading in the vague direction towards which the T.S.A. agent wafted an arm. It takes him a hideous moment to clock TK, alone inside an expanding circle made of fellow first responders and passengers wearing shock blankets, bewildered and milling around. There he is – directly in the sunshine, glowing gold and alive. Carlos stops because the sight of him takes his breath. His heartbeat pounds in his ears. He doesn’t even feel himself launch into a run, but the warm air thumps against him as he moves faster than he has ever moved – his limbs firm now, muscles powerful, carrying him to the center of his world. Carlos runs, and as he runs the heartbeat in his ears changes to words. He hears his voice and he hears TK’s, whooshing in the wind.

Carlos touches the shallow end of the pool and stops, allowing himself the time to look back. Appearing slightly fuzzy and gleaming through Carlos’ goggles, TK sits on the edge at the deep end, palms splayed flat on the tiles, legs dangling in the water and kicking softly. He raises a hand, waving to beckon Carlos back. There’s something so sweet about the gesture, Carlos’ stomach flutters. He has to stop himself from smiling as he swims towards TK. He peers through his goggles at the sharpening sight of TK’s feet under the water, the way he moves them in a circular motion. Carlos keeps his head under and grabs TK’s foot playfully. TK howls, elated.
“I knew you were going to do that, and it still scared me,” TK says, his voice squeaky through his rolling laughter.
Suddenly it feels to Carlos like he’s known TK forever – like they’re best friends from school days, kids at play.
TK kicks up, splashing water over Carlos’ shoulder. There’s a hunger in his eyes that Carlos tries to mirror. They hold it for a few seconds before they have to look away.Bookmarked by goodways

Summary
He has to admit TK’s happiness has been contagious ever since Carlos brought Lou-Two home. The lizard has brought out a childish side of him that Carlos loves, a side that he’s happy TK never lost despite all that he’s been through.
Carlos is once again overwhelmed with all of the love he has for him, sometimes terrified of it because he knows there’s not anything that he wouldn’t do to keep him happy, to keep this smile on his face.
He’d bring home a thousand more lizards if they make TK this happy, and he’s not so sure how he feels about that.

TK and Carlos take a pilgrimage to New York that includes a night on the legendary Fire Island, where TK is determined to make up for some previous party-day mistakes. They befriend an older couple who open their eyes to what gay life was like decades ago – and why it matters now.

They walk a fair way down the beach, creating a distance between them and the hamlet of bars and beach rentals where guys are milling about. Carlos chooses a secluded spot within a beautiful swathe of grassy sand dunes, freshly whipped by the earlier weather. He takes the towels out of their bag and places them neatly over the sand while TK gazes up at the silver coin moon. He lowers himself down onto a towel, wishing he was better at naming constellations.
TK shuffles so he can sit between Carlos’ legs and lean back. The temperature has dropped again and it’s nice to feel Carlos wrapped around him as the sea breeze blows. He relaxes against Carlos’ heartbeat and feels at peace, but sad. The sky above them is so beautiful. He imagines all the men who danced beneath it decades ago for the last time – thinking they’d be back the next year, and the next – how many of them never made it back at all?Bookmarked by goodways

So they dance, whirling around the kitchen island together, laughing and swaying and smiling into kisses. They separate and keep dancing, moving around each other; when Carlos shimmies his shoulders, TK tries to mimic the movement with the same goofy look on his face that he’d had years ago at the honky tonk. Carlos knows the adorable expression is one that TK wears on his face when he’s concentrating and trying to dance. He still can’t shimmy though, his shoulders going up and down instead of forward and back, and when he tries to imitate the way Carlos is moving his hips, Carlos can’t help but laugh.

The sleeves of Carlos’ hoodie are too long for TK. He looks down at his fingers poking out and scratches the broken skin around his thumbnail, feeling like a boy. He feels like a boy a lot at the moment. It’s common after losing a parent, to regress into that place where your mom or dad have been gone from the house for a while, and you panic that they’ll never come home. One day, it happens. They never come home again. Even if you are an adult in your twenties, forties, sixties – it’s terrifying and an utter gut-punch.
"You want to talk about it?” Cooper asks. “Or not talk about it?"
TK takes a moment to consider this. Cooper's arrival at the loft, upon secret invitation from Carlos, was something of an ambush – albeit a welcome one. Nonetheless, TK had intended to spend the whole evening alone with his thoughts. He hadn't expected to articulate any of it.
