This bar has been up the street from my apartment the whole time I’ve lived in this city and I’ve never set foot in it until tonight.
I don’t know what to do. I just don’t want to be at home. I don’t want to be out either. I don’t want to be anywhere.
“Can I have another please?” I asked the bartender
He nodded. He pulled the bottle out from behind the bar and uncorked it, pouring the dark red liquid into my wine glass. I quickly drank down about half of it as salty tears began streaming down my face, stinging the corners of my eyes. I desperately wiped them away with the back of my sleeve, praying no one was looking at me—but I was wrong.
I met someone’s gaze. He was sitting at the other end of the bar. He looked almost worse than I did. The look on his face was… devastated—like someone kicked his dog. The expression didn’t fit his soft features at all, which made him look kind of odd.
It was as if the world around us froze, not romantically, but it was like the feeling of being caught doing something you’re not supposed to. We just stared at each other, wide-eyed, like two deer in headlights.
