Summary
Hajime Hinata, a Reserve Course student, is only trying to get by in the seemingly perfect yet oppressive Hope's Peak academy. When he goes to get something from the vending machine, he isn't expecting anything out of the ordinary to happen.
And yet, by a stroke of luck, he ends up next to Nagito Komaeda, a Main Course student who finds himself enraptured by Hajime for no discernible reason at first.
It's only too bad that in Hope's Peak, the Reserves and the Ultimates aren't supposed to mingle with each other, lest they want to face heavy consequences

Starving. They were all starving in this stupid building, with these stupid strawberry and grape wallpaper tempting them. No-one wanted to kill anyone, nor did they want to die; not even Nagito. Hajime being Hajime wanted to figure out a way that his classmates could escape this endless torture, even if it costs his life. Hajime didn't really see a point in his existence, the people around him were "Ultimates" of some sort.
What was he? A talentless reserve course student who was just accidentally thrown into the mix for reasons he didn't know. So, he decided to come up with his own talent to be remembered for.The Ultimate Sacrifice.

Hajime Hinata is simultaneously completely oblivious, in complete denial, and head over heels in hopeless love, and Nagito Komaeda is...at best, charitably describable as his usual self. From the outside, it looks as if they'll never manage to actually get together. It's a good thing Hajime has many, many friends to make sure that doesn't happen.

Hope's Peak has implemented several policies to remedy the issue, but it merely delays the inevitable.
