Summary
Five years after my initial playthrough, I decided to play this stupid, beautiful, obsession-inducing game again and fell right back in love with FenHawke. This fic is a love letter to the game - mostly canon-compliant and as self-indulgently long, fluffy, angsty, and full of banter as I can make it. I'm also exploring magic, first as something that actually needs to be hidden and second as something that can be used in peace as much as it can be in war. Tags will be added as they become relevant, but this is already 33 (edit: 60 [edit: 159]) pages long in my drafts and I have to get it out into the world.
Hawke didn't want to be a mercenary, let alone a hero, and definitely not a Champion. Fenris, for his part, wanted to escape magic in all its forms. However, life rarely gives one what they want - and for the two of them, that might even be a good thing.

Electricity crackled around them, close enough the hair on Lucanis's arms and neck lifted. Lightning struck the ground, hitting the guards and Calivan in turn. First one round, then another, and a third. The smell of burnt flesh reached his nose and electricity danced on the puddles of standing water that dotted the floor.
Spite appeared in his mirror form on the other side of her. He leaned forward, head tilted as if studying her. "Smells of lavender and lightning," he purred. "Storm beneath the skin." He leaned closer, as if sniffing her. "I LIKE her."
Lucanis tried to ignore him, telling himself it was probably better the demon liked her than the alternative.

Happy Holidays! Shameless shippiness to follow, plus lots of Rita b/c I love her. What were the many June/Nick scenes that we didn’t see? What did they say during their many meals together, prepared by Rita? What did Rita think of this love story? What did June and Nick do (ahem) and talk about during their many months at The Globe? There’s some melancholy and reflection in this fic but I ultimately lean into humor and romance b/c there’s enough depression on the show, thank you very much.
