"Lan Furen?" a quiet voice asks, shaking with nerves. "I'm A-Ying. A-Zhan said I could come here sometimes, if I needed an a-niang."
A-Ying. Li Xiaoyan remembers. A-Zhan had talked all about his friend during their last visit. She had never seen him talk so animatedly about someone else before.
"A-Zhan's friend," she says and she watches A-Ying nod his head up and down as hope beings to flutter across his face. "What are you doing here A-Ying? Past your curfew and across the sect?"
He shifts from foot to foot again, biting his lip. Yet she startles again when she watches tears well up in his eyes as he looks at her with a pleading expression.
"A-Zhan won't wake up!"
Li Xiaoyan, Lan Furen, silently complies with her imprisonment. There's nothing she can do when it could risk what little time she's allowed to see A-Huan and A-Zhan. Yet when a strange little boy stumbles into her house late one night, introducing himself as A-Zhan's friend and pleading for help, Li Xiaoyan doesn't hesitate to stumble her way into a storm to save her children. What she can save is better than what's at risk to lose.

"It's no problem," Wei Ying says with a shrug. "You ready to have fun with your Ying-ge a-Yuan?"
"No," Wen Yuan says before running off into the apartment. Wei Ying stares after him in silence with his mouth agape. Wen Qing just sighs.
"I thought we were past the terrible twos," she grumbles. "Apparently he likes to be a difficult four. Look, Wei Ying, just keep him alive, pay attention to the allergy list I left on the fridge, and when in doubt play Spirited Away on the TV. He loves that movie."
"I love that movie too!" Wei Ying says. Wen Qing pats him on the shoulder.
"I know."
Wei Ying has never been a good cook, hell, he tries his best to avoid a kitchen by all means necessary. But babysitting a kid with specific needs sometimes means admitting defeat and calling in backup. Luckily Lan Zhan is there to help!

I should have never let you near me, Jin Zixuan thinks as he opens his eyes again and watches Jiang Yanli stare at him with a fragile expression on her face. We should have loved and let go. We should have never allowed ourselves so close in the first place.
"Yanli," he says. "I don't want to die. I don't know what to do."
Still, even as he says those words, he wants to toss aside his sword. Or maybe plunge it into his heart himself. For her, he thinks he can live his last moments knowing his death kept her alive.
"Please Zixuan," Jiang Yanli begs. "I can't, you don't—please—"
"I won't forget you," he cries. "I have loved you since the moment I first saw you. I wish we could have more time, I wish—"

“Just how long has it been since Cang Qiong was attacked?”
Shen Jiu pauses. He wasn’t really keeping track of the days in his head, but it’s been longer than he’s really thought about.
“Nearly two weeks,” he replies. He turns back to face Liu Qingge. “Why?”
“Where are the others?” Liu Qingge’s brows are furrowed. “Did they really leave you with me?”
“The others?” Shen Jiu repeats. It takes him a moment to realize that Liu Qingge does not know that it’s just the two of them. That Liu Qingge was the only one he found not who wasn’t missing or dead after Cang Qiong’s fall. “Liu Qingge, there are no others.”
The silence that falls is as sharp as a guillotine's blade.
It's decades after the end of the old world, and days after Cang Qiong's fall, but that's not what matters. What matters is that Shen Jiu is stuck with Liu Qingge of all people, as the two of them try to survive a world full of undead and cruelty. Along the way, maybe, there's room for forgiveness and love. That's if the boy back from the dead doesn't kill them first.

He sounds way too casual for having abandoned their toddler cousin at daycare today. Wen Qing is trying not to freak out.
“Why didn’t you pick up A-Yuan today?” Wen Qing perches her phone between her ear and her shoulder. “I’m at the hospital Wen Ning, I have been for hours. Did the daycare call? Who picked up A-Yuan today?”
“You're still at the hospital? And no? Maybe Wei Ying picked him up.”
Wen Qing’s rapid thoughts come to a screeching halt.
After going missing for a year, a worse-for-wear Wei Ying shows up on Wen Qing's doorstep. She makes him stay, even though it adds a mentally ill young man to her odd mix of family. She doesn't regret it, but she still gets scared when Wei Ying accidentally becomes A-Yuan's caretaker for the night when he is not able to handle the task. Or so she thinks.

In the blink of an eye Lu Guang drops his chopsticks on the counter to instead reach his hand across the distance between them and fist it in the collar of Cheng Xiaoshi’s shirt. He yanks him forward, noting the surprise on the dark-haired boy’s face, before he slots their lips together.
Cheng Xiaoshi’s lips taste like ramen broth, rich and spicy.

“Techno please, work with me here,” Phil pleads. “The kid doesn’t have anywhere else to go right now, it’s only going to be for a few months.”
“And it’s only been a year since Wilbur died,” Techno spat out. “You’re already taking another damn kid into the house.”
“It’s not like that—” Phil is quick to say, but Techno is done listening. He storms his way over to the backdoor, throwing it open even as his father follows.
“Techno wait please don’t—”
His words come too late. Techno isn’t even halfway down the back porch steps before he slips into his fur, hands and feet becoming paws and nimble limbs jumping down the last few steps.
Or, a year after Wilbur's death, Phil takes in a new foster kid. Techno isn't pleased, but slowly it's this golden kid that shows him how to love again. Maybe life is worth living after all.

Seele slouched in her seat, sniffling quietly. She loved hanging out with Bronya, being around her girlfriend made her so happy, but it sucked that she was so busy. That was the problem with your girlfriend being the Supreme Guardian of Belobog.
When Bronya is busy all day and can't make the time for her, Seele decides that she'll do something nice and get her girlfriend a gift. Being sick sort of throws a wrench in those plans.
