April’s keepin’ it under the lid ‘til Mike gets back from his mission up north, but I had a feelin’ you’d want t’ know.” Her expression goes flat, and her voice lowers. “They said something ‘bout transporting a mutant. A mutant turtle.”
It has been nearly thirty years since Donatello disappeared from their lives. Raphael had lost all hope of ever seeing his lost brother again, only for him to be told that a mutant turtle is being transported by the EPF. Now, he has embark on a journey and put aside differences with those he cut ties with years ago, both physically and emotionally—all in the name of finding Donatello once and for all.

Donnie always imagined that after Leo came back, everything would be okay again. Instead, his friendship with Raph stays rocky, his schedule gets even harder to manage, it still feels like he's the only one looking after Mikey and now there's a stranger living with them. It's getting hard to imagine how he could get any more stressed.
Then he wakes up with an awful headache, restrained, in an unfamiliar laboratory. Being restrained or experimented on would be bad enough on its own. Add to the mix that lying on the lab table for days and weeks is the first chance he's had to process everything else that's happened in his family--well, it's not a happy mix.

“I’m exhausted, Donnie. If you can’t listen to what I’m saying, fine. You’re benched. Don’t go on the missions for the next two weeks. There. Is that what you want?”
Leo snapped at him.
So Donatello left.

In truth, Donnie had known it all along. Even in this best-case scenario, only one of them could get out of this place. Mikey and Raph couldn’t sustain the portal, and the added weight of both Leo and Donnie together would have only made the strain worse. Donnie could see the cracks charging further up Mikey’s entire body and knew they didn’t have long. Much like Donnie and Leo, they were tired.
Not to mention that with Raph balancing Mikey’s energy (from the looks of it) and reaching out, there was no one to stop the Kraang from coming out with them.
And, well, Donnie had long given himself that role when he was first left on the platform. When he made this plan with Leo. When he had told him three of the four steps with such confidence that Leo didn’t know otherwise.
So, he’d known. He knew all along that it had to be Leo to get out. The better twin.

Without a doubt, Donatello was a flawed, dysfunctional excuse of a creature. His existence served no real purpose and maybe the world would be better off without him.
But he was still Donatello Hamato. He would always be Donatello Hamato, as cursed and wretched as he was. That would not be taken from him, no matter how clinging to that identity physically burned.

Summary
Donnie collided with Leo in a tangle of limbs. There was an instinctive cling in return from his twin, before the realization sunk in.
"No." Leo breathed in his ear, immediately shattered. "No, no, no, no, no!”
Every muscle in Donnie's body was shaking like an earthquake from the amount of effort he'd just expended. The explosion caught up to them, sending the twins spiralling away into space and debris.
For one singular moment, Donnie allowed himself a burst of victory. His heart was still thudding a thousand miles an hour in his chest, having been absolutely terrified he wasn't going to make it in time. But he did. And he held onto Leo, his prize.
Then they hit the ground, the sudden tumble bursting them apart. Donnie felt the world spin, rapid and disorientating, before he slammed into something rock and cracking under his impact.
