Summary
There's a place up north, they call it the Valley of the Waters, where villagers appear dead on their doorsteps. Despaired, hopeless, there is noone else to turn to but the king of Camelot. It's a three day ride to the valley, four days before the next person dies, and years of history between him and Merlin. It's on Arthur not to drown in it.

An unfortunate incident with a pixie leads to Arthur and Merlin swapping bodies for a day. When Merlin’s closely guarded secrets surface in the process, it’s up to Arthur to figure out how to proceed. Trust, love, protection, they’re all forms of the same thing, aren’t they? And what of secrets, burdens, and all the lies we keep to ourselves? This is a story about what would happen if we chose to pull off the veil and step, together, into the light.

Summary
Arthur wasn’t sure what this charm would do, if anything, but he’d held it in his hands, and he’d pressed it to his lips, and he’d willed all of his strength and protection and fervent desire for Merlin to be okay into the metal.
He’d broken his father’s laws for Merlin, Uther’s one cardinal rule, and that had to count for something. Arthur just wasn’t sure what.
…
Arthur notices the cuts and bruises on Merlin’s skin and assumes the worst. Out of options, he turns to magic for help.

“I’m leaving.” Merlin says, because this situation already cost him his Duolingo streak, and he’s too tired to deal with Arthur when the food Gaius is serving him looks like it belongs on a list of war crimes committed by the Canadian soldiers.
“Where to?” His mentor asks, and Merlin shrugs, before going to his room and packing his bag.
“India. Gaius, I have decided I don’t give a damn, especially not when having to eat that bland food. I’ll be back in three months, make sure Arthur doesn’t die when I’m out.”
“Merlin!” And maybe, if he was younger and didn’t travel back to the past last month, he would’ve actually cared about the ‘eyebrow of disapproval’.
Or, a 1500yo Merlin gets zapped to the past during his vacation to Cuba. You’d think he’s happy to see Arthur again. He’s not.

As it dawned on everyone what exactly had just happened, Arthur’s battle-proven instincts kicked in and overtook his petrified mind once more, playing out his body’s natural response to any worst-case scenario:

Alternatively: After a ritual goes disastrously wrong, Merlin's magic has been transferred to Arthur, who is still unaware that Merlin has magic in the first place. Believing himself to be a danger to everyone around him, Arthur sets out to live the rest of his life in self-imposed exile.

“Hmmm,” the goddess hums, “yes I see that this kingdom is in dire straits. I will have to rectify that immediately.” With a flick of her wrist Uther is flung from the throne and off the dais into the crowd of courtiers who fill the room. Arthur gives a shout as he moves to help his father, but before he can move more than a step from his seat he is held back by some invisible force. Even Morgana had stood up in shock when Uther was thrown. Kethra gives Arthur a reprimanding look and Arthur stops struggling. The members of the court have already helped Uther back to his feet. Though the king cannot speak he is trying his best to scream at the goddess. “The ruler of this kingdom is in a pathetic condition. Camelot is under the dominion of the gods and shall be ruled by one worthy of her. Camelot shall be ruled by the strongest among you.”
