“Hey,” he says, and his voice is a little higher than Johnny expected, a little breathless. He pushes his glasses up. “Uh. You need a partner? Or- I mean, I need a partner. Obviously. That’s why I’m here. At this bench. With you. Not that you’re a last resort, I just- I was getting coffee, or I had a question about the junction rule, and then I realized I was supposed to be here, so I-” He stops himself, letting out a short, self-conscious laugh. “Hi. I’m Peter.”
He sticks out his hand, a smear of ink at the side of the thumb, nails bitten to the quick. The handshake is brief, a little too firm, and Peter’s palm is slightly calloused in a way that doesn’t quite match the scatterbrained exterior.
“Johnny,” he says, leaning his hip against the bench and crossing his arms. “You always this composed on the first day, or am I getting a special show?”
Johnny Storm, the only survivor of the space expedition, moves to New York. Running from the grief and the past, however, is made complicated by strange, unexplainable transformations and Peter Parker, a biophysics major harboring secrets of his own.

As they ride yet again through the humidity of a queer, sultry summer, their two horses side-by-side, Peter can’t help but look at him from the corner of his eye, cautious, wanting. The charcoal leather. The sharp angles. All the ways the legends are true.

“So,” Wade says, smiling that sly, half-cocked smile of his, hat tipped to the side. “Partners?”
Bit by a radioactive spider, declared an outlaw, and trapped in an alliance with an unruly mercenary, Peter Parker sets out to clear his name and expose the corruption that plagues the frontier. As he struggles with his newfound powers and an unsettling attraction to his partner, Peter must decide what he is— a man, a myth, or something else entirely.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said it like that. It was my pleasure, really. Some grandma tried to pull my pants down, and my favorite bodega gave me enough free pastrami for the next month,” he smiles, bumping shoulders again with Peter. Peter selfishly thinks that he could have used the free food more than Johnny, on account of his crippling poverty, but keeps his mouth shut. “Every time I do ground-level work, I remember how satisfying it is. And I only get to do ground-level work with you. I feel like I should be thanking you.”
“Are you kidding me?! Whenever I’m injured, the Four patches me up, for free. You take care of New York for me when I can’t. You’re always there when I need you to be. If this is a competition, then you’re beating me, fair and square.”
“If me being connected to this city and its people is beating you, then I want to beat you for the rest of my life.”
Peter softens. He reaches forward and touches Johnny’s arm. “I’d like that.”
After a horrific incident on an August afternoon in which eight people die, Peter finds solace in his best friend.
