“Nnngh,” Was the only way he could describe how he felt. He barely even realized that he had groaned that out loud when Phil perked up from wherever he was.
“You awake?” He asked.
“We’re still down here,” Tommy replied instead, complaint overtaking his tone.
Phil chuckled, “Yea. Yea we are.”
It was then that the pinching feeling disappeared from his wrist, the same one that was the sole contact between him and Phil.
“What were you doing?” He asked.
“Checking your pulse,” Phil replied.

Or, Tommy gets trapped underneath a collapsed building after a hero-villain fight gone wrong. It just so happens that the notorious villain 'Angel of Death' is trapped there with him.

The particles around him accelerate as he turns around. Looking up to see Wilbur sprinting full speed towards him causes Tommy to choke on the sob trying to worm it’s way out knowing he almost did that earlier this evening. There’s a chance this night might break him, but right now? Right now he’s watching his older brother run toward him, and he pretends like Wil’s coming to take Tommy home.
Sidestepping behind a wall Tommy whispers, “Bye, Wilby.”
And when Wilbur turns the corner?
No one is there.

Or: Tommy's cursed to travel through time, meeting new friends and family, before being forcibly ripped away from them every time. He just didn't realize that those people are as weird as he is, and love him very very much.

He sped past dozens of signs with various messages on them, but they all meant relatively the same thing: “All Fae keep out or die.” some of them even said it outright.
Tommy’s wings screamed as he beat them desperately to get an extra boost of speed to push him through the trees into an open field. A panorama of farmland stretched out before him.
Tommy could feel shift in the air as fae magic gave way to nether magic. Tommy shivered and he knew that they noticed he had entered their realm. Their empire.
He slowed and spun around to see the pursuing fae skid to a stop at the edge of the woods, sneering at him. They all knew that Tommy was as good as dead now, himself included.
