“Ilya, are you deflecting because YOU don’t want to go?” The brown eyes Ilya folded for every time narrowed, flashing from pleading to suspicious in an instant. “C’mon, it would be so nice to just be in real nature for a bit.”
Okay, fine. Ilya did not want to go. As much as he loved their team, he did not want to share his precious summertime with Shane paddling around a lake like some kind of 1800s fur trader. And frankly, he did not want to find out what constituted “real” nature in Shane’s mind.
Or: When Shane insists they partake in the annual Centaurs canoe trip, Ilya wants no part in it. Throughout the trip though, Ilya gets to reflect on all the ways he and Shane have grown individually, together, and by being well-loved by their team.

Ilya continued messing with the sticker, not looking over at Shane. “I have a big dick.”
Shane dropped the blooms he was holding and they scattered around his feet. “Shit, um…” He reached down and scooped them up, putting them back into place on the counter.
“And what about you?” Ilya asked, turning to pin Shane down again with his icy stare, a trace of a smirk on his face.
Shane panicked. “What about what?...”
Ilya raised a brow innocently. “Do you go on a lot of dates?”
Shane laughed, relieved. “Ohhh, um… Well not really, no. I’m usually pretty busy with the store.”
Ilya made a pouty face and tilted his head to the side. “Is a shame, you are very pretty…”
OR: Shane Hollander owns Hollander’s Flower Shop. Ilya Rozanov, a firefighter who’s new to Montreal, visits every week to buy flowers for his numerous dates. Until Shane realizes, maybe it’s just an excuse to see him.

Ilya saw it coming. The defenseman skating to him, the inevitability of the hit. He prepared for it, but he didn't see the other defenseman at his back, he didn't prepare for that hit.
His body jerked violently from the hits. At some point, his legs were in the air and his head was on the ice, and he felt it, the unnatural twist of his neck. A sharp, electric pain traveled from his spine to the rest of his body, and he knew it was bad.
"Ilya! DON'T FUCKING MOVE!" Cliff's voice sounded too far away.
"I gotcha you, man, don't move."His face appeared in his vision. He felt warm hands on the sides of his neck.
"Cliff," his voice sounded wet and broken. "My neck." He could hear the commotion around him, his team fighting the defenseman, the rest of the arena screaming. He felt his body shake every time the sharp, burning pain pulsated from that point in his neck.
"I know, man, I know." Cliff looked worried. "Wh... what do you feel?"
"Fucking hurts," he said weakly.
OR
Ilya Rozanov wants a new agent.
Yuna Hollander is the best in what she does and she has a son.
Her son is a teacher.
The rest is history. -
