The fighter doesn’t break his sprint.
Lance pops an approaching climber off the side of the building with a blast to the stomach. He doesn’t watch them go careening down. “You’re kind of small for a Blade, so maybe Tiny? Shortstack? Shrimpman? Do you guys have, like, school ID numbers?”
No response except the squelch of a sword sinking into flesh and being pulled back out. They’re almost at the top of the stairs. “You’re also real quiet. Maybe…Mr. Sneaky? Ninja? Samura— ah, um. Rogue?”
The Blade stutters to a stop, masked eyes flashing over Lance for only a second. It could have been anything, but so far he’s had nothing, so Lance grasps it with both hands. “Rogue! Awesome. So, I’ll ask again, where in Altea’s name are we going?”

Because asking: How many phones do you have? could have been innocuous, if it’d been said in a different tone, with a different energy. If Steve knew Dustin less like the back of his hand.
And he tries to play it cool, casual, all: “Two, why?” over Robin’s earnest “Technically three, if you count Keith’s in the back,” and he doesn’t even have to act out the indignation in him when Dustin declares this sufficient, then elbows behind Steve’s goddamn counter and commandeers Steve’s goddamn computer.
He can even jump on board with Robin’s dismay—her pile dude, come on—but then Dustin blabs what he’s after:
“Looking up Eddie’s friends' phone numbers.”
And Steve’s heart starts beating heavier, weightier, and he has to really work hard to put the lessons he’s picked up into place. Every scrap of a straight fucking face he can muster.
Because he’s gotta nail this.

“Hey there, big boy,” he says, trying to coax a reaction out of his prisoner.
“Hi,” simply answers Harrington. There’s something weird with the teen. His voice sounds different from what he remembers it to be; less pitchy, more authoritative. Kas feels obligated to listen. Moreover, Harrington looks… Different, taller, his features are sharper than usual. His eyes feel like they're piercing whatever soul he has left. He doesn’t focus on that, charting the changes to his recent transformation.
Somewhere far within himself, he notices Harrington’s neck, it’s smooth and unblemished, and yet something tells him that the strangulation scar should still be there.
Or: Eddie wakes up as a monster, but it seems like he may not be the only one.

Oh, he’s dropped the Harrington now, and Steve knows he’s fucked, knows Hopper’s not going to back off.
“Because I can’t fucking sleep, ok?” Steve whispers, his voice hoarse and broken. “When I do, I dream about…about the fucking Upside Down, about my friends dying, about me being too slow to save them, and I wake up screaming. And I can hardly get to sleep anyway because these,” Steve yanks his three layers up, reveals the marred skin on his sides, “keep me awake.”
Hopper’s face is stony, unreadable.
For a moment, Steve feels some sick kind of gratification that he’s managed to render the man speechless. That he’s made somebody care.

Until now, nobody's worked out that Steve's essentially homeless, living in his car. But one night, when Steve's cold and alone and in pain, Hopper chances across him.

Summary
Eddie never had an issue with his relationship with Steve being kept a secret; he knew the dangers of the general public of Hawkins discovering good ol' golden boy Steve Harrington was dating Hawkins' resident freak. Besides, the most important person in his life outside of Steve, Wayne, knew and that was more than enough for Eddie. If Eddie was being honest anyways, he didn't know who Steve had to tell. The truth of the matter was that Eddie was completely fine with keeping his love for his Stevie pure and untainted by the hatred of his peers. But, he didn't realize that would mean hearing the love of his life died while drinking coffee and watching the morning news.
Or, six months of love goes up in flames when Steve dies in the Starcourt fire with Chief Hopper.

“What’s wrong with what I wrote?” Steve whines, running his fingers through his hair until it’s all mussed up and falling into his face.
Chrissy snorts. “It sounds like you’re telling him his hair is frizzy and dry.”
“I said it was pretty!” He throws his hands in the air before crossing them and pouting his lower lip out.
Chrissy can’t help but laugh. She’s always liked Steve. He’s nicer than most of his friends, and he’s easy to talk to. But this is a side she’s never seen of him. She’s not sure anyone has; can’t imagine Carol or Tommy seeing him put his whole heart into something and not tearing it to shreds.
“Do you use conditioner?” she asks, throwing finger quotations around it as she reads it off the crumpled page.
Steve’s blushing again, cheeks all blotchy and red, rather unbecoming for the shoo-in for this year’s prom king. “Well, I thought you said you’d help!” he says, a little too loud for the library.
