On the other hand, wasn’t this why he began traveling to begin with? To be far away from all the forces trying to kill him or draw him back into politics, to gain some perspective by looking outside himself and his narrow-minded goals? Essek pressed a thumb against his mouth as he contemplated this, scanning the paper to a scrap of fabric pinned to the bottom of the map. It was striped purple and gold, a colorful addition to the parchment, and it took Essek a moment to understand why it was there. He could use it to teleport.

One moment he was holding on for dear life, the next he was falling. It almost felt like slow motion, watching the ship shrink before him. He could hear warning bells faintly through the storm and a frantic scream of “Man overboard!” but it was gone in an instant, swallowed up by frozen water.

Summary
After his duel, Zuko had fled to the Earth Kingdom where he has been living for the past 3 years, living as a farmer and a healer after being adopted by a nice Earth Kingdom family, presumed dead by the Fire Nation when disappearing while injured, giving Iroh a chance to keep Azula from staying loyal to her father. Given a chance to heal & find people who genuinely care about him with no ties or loyalty to his father, he is able to be saved from growing bitter and jaded after years of failing at a mission. Using his alias as The Blue Spirit as a healer who has learned to use firebending to heal as opposed to as a thief and assassin, he is able to influence views on firebending from both the Earth Kingdom and Water Tribes as wells as firebenders themselves. He comes across the Gaang in the harbor town he has been living in, connecting with them as a healer who still remembers how to fight from what his life used to be, joining their cause before they even reach the Northern Water Tribe.
This is a series, I have posted a summary at the end of the 1st part if you don't want to read Zuko's recovery arc. I would suggest reading it, but it isn't plot heavy and I'm not here to tell you how to live your life.

Summary
It starts like this: Essek, in a fit of lonely idiocy, agrees to partake in a honeypot scheme with the Mighty Nein. It goes about as smoothly as he should have expected.
It evolves to this: by decree of Deirta Thelyss, Verin is tasked with protecting his brother and his brother’s friends(??) as they parlay with the Children of Malice over the diplomatic incident they caused. Verin remembers his brother being much more of an aloof douche and much less of a floating disaster.
Or: In a reality where the Mighty Nein do a stop in Xhorhas prior to meeting up with DeRogna, Essek agrees to help with one side quest and ends up with a lover, a brother, and a fight with a god.

Verin raised the stone to his face and activated the rune. “Hey Essek, um, is this thing working? Mother has summoned us to an urgent den meeting she says is very important, so yeah.. Essek?” Verin waited for a few moments. Essek did not reply, which sparked some worry in Verin’s mind. His brother was a powerful caster, but really quite squishy when it comes to combat. What if someone has attempted an assassination against him, with an anti magic field! Those exist, he’s heard of them, for sure. At that moment, Essek’s response finally chimed through. Except, he wasn’t really saying anything. Verin held the stone to his ear and listened, all he could hear was faint rapid breathing, followed by a cut off groan. That confirmed it for Verin, his mind spiralled with a series of images of his brother lying on the ground, bleeding out, unable to call for help as he utters his last breath!
