There’s always been a bit of a disconnect.
A lot of things don’t click for him, never have, and he’d given up trying to force a square peg in a round hole a long time ago.
He learns from a young age that Love is raised fists and high voices, and that Dad is bared teeth and a cracked bottle.
It’s easy, when he thinks of it that way, an immediate connection that comes straight to his mind. It’s easy in the same way that Mom means bitter vomit and trembling hands, whispered pleas and small white pills.

Jason makes the mistake of looking up, and the wooden stake catches him under the chin, knocking him backwards. With his hands cuffed behind his back, he can’t catch himself, and he hits the concrete hard. It drives the air out of his lungs. Jason coughs, trying to get his breath back, but something is wrong in his chest and he can’t get enough air, can’t take a deep enough breath. He squeezes his eyes shut and clenches his teeth together, and focuses only on dragging oxygen into his damaged lungs.
The slow, lazy footsteps coming closer and closer to Jason’s prone form are more of a threat than he ever thought such a simple sound could be.
“Wow,” the Joker says above him. “That looked like it really hurt.”

Summary
The view shifts when Batman stands up. From this angle, the brightness of the city lights makes it possible to distinguish the outlines. Jason’s eyes are closed, and his head lulls backward, as if he was asleep. But there are wet streaks on his cheeks and his lips open and close slightly, soundlessly. There must be another movement too; perhaps he squeezes Batman’s hand, or attempts at a kick, because Batman readjusts his grip and says: “Shh. We’re going home. We’re going home.” Everything twice.
To the side, something glints in the darkness; a familiar shape, all sharp.
Dick pauses.
He rewinds the recording.
dick is welcomed back in gotham by his not-quite-dead brother and his father's refusal to share the report of a night from weeks prior.

With near silent steps, Batman rushed past him to the bloodied body. Gloved fingers felt for a pulse even though they both knew that Jason’s aim had been true. A quick death, more than this creature deserved, but a final one. No second chances here.
Bruce rose from his crouch like a mass of black, his cape dragging the shadows with it. “Jason–”
“Bless me father, for I have sinned.” Sarcasm dripped from his words like venom from a snake’s fangs.

But he can't say any of that.
Three years later, he runs into his adoptive father again. He has those same words on the tip of his tongue. But Bruce thinks he's dead, and Jason doesn't know him enough anymore.
He thinks he can force those words out anyway.
He just doesn't know if he will.
(An AU in which Bruce is not a vigilante but his kids are- Bruce is oblivious to this)

Jason cleans his rifle, the simple movements of which he does not remember learning so specifically. “You’re not real, so fuck off.”

Talon wonders what it's doing here alone. Humans this size tend to be well protected by their nest mothers and fathers. Has the little one wandered off?
Talon coos again, scooting a little closer.
No matter. The tiny human will go cold if Talon leaves it here, and unlike with Talon, humans do not become warm again once they’ve been cold.

Summary
On Jason's feet, are no longer the new shiny red trainers Bruce bought him, but his old and frayed shoes instead. They look even more decrepit now that the boy's actually wearing them, and it's a miracle they didn't rip apart when he put them on.
Something in Bruce cracks a little, but he's always been a good actor. He pushes the worry that he's missing something important somewhere else and smiles at the boy, "Got everything you need?"
Jason lets out a barely perceptible sigh of relief, and Bruce only notices it because he was looking for it, evidently glad Bruce doesn't mention the change in footwear, "Yeah! Let's go."
(Bruce really can't stand Jason's shoes.)
