Well, that was not what Max was asking for but she’ll take it. Another new addition to Mike Wheeler—him apologising!
“What are you sorry for? Your awful driving?” Her face cracks into a wide smile and she doubles over laughing. She really did find herself hilarious. Max realises quickly that she’s the only person in the vehicle cracking up, “oh you’re serious?”

Mike offers to drive Max to her routine hospital appointments after the whole 'end of the world' situation. Usually they just bicker and talk about Will, but today's car ride was different—Mike decides to unburden himself.
A heart to heart ensues.

Nancy wasn’t someone who was meant to be a sister. She was an independent soul from day one. She’d come into the world kicking and screaming, faced with a society that told her that she had to stick up for herself, because no one else would.
So Mike had been a wrench in her plans. With him came the title of big sister, the expectation to look after a smaller person even when they were dumb and rude and annoying. Nancy never wanted to be a sister, much less a big one, and Mike had gone and messed that up.

We all said we’d be in each other’s weddings.” He chuckled. “And Mike called dibs on being my best man, and then you and Dustin started freaking out, because you were both gonna call dibs, so I said you could all do it. Remember? I need all my best men.”
Will puffed out his cheeks, running a hand through his hair. He already hadn’t lived up to that twice now. He’d missed Dustin’s wedding, he hadn’t even been invited to Mike’s (not that he’d expected to be.) This was his last shot.
And something about it seemed final. If he missed this, then that was it. He had no doubt they’d still try to reach out, but it wouldn’t be the same. He would’ve broken something he couldn’t fix.
He sighed.
“Okay.”
Ten years after the end of the world, Lucas and Max get married.

All the pain, all the suffering, it was finally over. Or at least it was for the small town of Hawkins. For Mike, however... No this couldn't be it. This couldn't be the end for him. He refused to let this be the end.
Everything else was perfect; they had defeated Vecna so it had to be perfect. Didn't it? But no... There was one fatal mistake and now Mike doubts if anything will ever feel right ever again.

He chokes back more tears, feeling horrible. He can practically feel Will’s heavy gaze on him, the memory of Will’s eyes strong in his mind. The truth weighs heavy on his shoulders and he can’t help but let it spill from his lips. “Oh Will, I was just starting to dream the silliest and softest of dreams.” He bites his lips. “I dreamt that we were hanging out at the arcade, playing dig dug, and you were laughing.” He pauses to swallow a cry. “You were laughing, and it was possibly, no it WAS, the most beautiful sound I ever heard.” He can feel his body weaken as he speaks. “I… you should know that I died slow Will. I fell slowly, I wasn’t always sick. I’m sorry.” he breaks, crying. “I’m sorry.” He shakes his head. “Will, you were like magic, you know? You casted a spell on me Will the wise, and I didn't even notice until it was too late. This feels more like a curse, divine revenge for being such a dick. “He sniffles. “Ironic isn't it?” Mike lets out a dry laugh.” I’m usually the one who casts divine smite.” He laughs again, sounding more pathetic. “I’m such a nerd.”
