He used to visit his mother all the time when he was in Moscow for the off-season. He’d take bouquets of marigolds and sunflowers, and he’d decorate her grave with them to try and brighten it up. He’d even placed a little solar powered lantern there for nighttime, so she wouldn’t feel so frightened of the dark.
It’s silly, probably. He knows she isn’t really there; knows that nothing is left of her but bones, by now. But still. Ilya had left it there anyway, just in case.
He’ll never get to visit his mama’s grave again.

So... this was insane. I don't even know where to start. I'd heard SO much about it and I had such high expectations and it was just,,, completely out of this world. The portrayal of Shane's autism? Insane. The texting between the different characters? Delightful. The smut? Don't even talk to me about it. High quality writing, too. Just a really great fic.

Yuna did not hate Rozanov, no — she despised him. Just the mention of his name let her blood boil inside her veins. Shane did not work his ass off to only be reduced to some kind of rivalry. He deserved the spotlight and praise for his own achievements and Yuna fought the urge to scream whenever her son just shrugged it off as if he didn't care. She couldn't fathom how he could be so nonchalant about all of this. He should be enraged and angry and stand up for himself. He was his own person, not an extension to some Russian who thought he was above everyone else!
And then Rozanov had the audacity to show up at the hospital, looking like his whole world had shattered in front of his eyes.

OR:
Yuna tries to help set Shane up with friends of friends’ daughters. He brushes her off. Or if she pushes, then he’ll go on exactly three dates before it peters out. I’m too busy, he says. You can make time, she encourages, and she means it. He can prioritize his happiness at this point, surely? She has all the compromises he could make with training and promo on the tip of her tongue if he only gives her the go-ahead.
Instead he shrugs and points out that he’s got to keep focus or he might lose to Rozanov in the scoring race (fucking Rozanov!), and that’s the end of it
It’s one more difference. One more thing she can’t help but worry about. David makes her so happy. Who will do that for Shane?

Shane dialed. It rang… and rang… and rang again. With each passing ring the pit gnawing its way through Shane's stomach was growing. Just as he felt like it was about to stop ringing and go to voicemail, it picked up. Shane breathed out a sigh of relief.
“Thank God, I was getting worried. Where are you?”
There was an unsettling beat of silence before someone answered, “Hollander?”
It was not Ilya’s voice. Shane’s stomach dropped. He did his best to keep his voice steady as he answered. “Yeah? Uh, who is this? Can you give Ilya back his phone please?”
Another beat of silence.
“Hollander… God, um, something’s happened-”
After the events of The Long Game, Shane and Ilya play their first All-Star Weekend. Things are going great, until they go truly and horribly sideways. Ilya is left hospitalized following an attack off the ice, and Shane is left to pick up the pieces and wonder why.
