Summary
Ed is an engineer aboard the Revenge, an interplanetary research vessel on a multi-year mission to study Jupiter's moon Europa. An accident requires that Ed awaken from cryostasis over six months early, and finds his only companion to be Stede, the ship's onboard AI. They develop an unconventional friendship, but is it possible to have more?
This is classic mutual pining with a sci-fi twist, inspired by all of my favorite stories about the nature of personhood.

“You–” Ed was struggling to parse what Stede was saying. “You’re playing your version of this song for me, right now? Like, in real time?”“Yes, Edward, that’s correct,” said Stede softly.
Ed’s brain momentarily seized up. He supposed it made sense that Stede was capable of learning a set of rules to do something like arrange and play a piece of music. There was something unnerving about this song, though. It felt, well–it felt organic . Reactive. Almost collaborative in a way. Ed was lost in the push and pull of it, until the last notes softly petered out.
“So, what did you think?” asked Stede. It sounded nervous again. Why the hell would someone program an anxiety response into a bot?

Lucius takes the lead again. “Because it’s not a prank. You’ve been insufferable, both of you. You’re either being angry at each other or sad at each other or, the worst, barely disguised horny at each other. Barely disguised. Cuffs stay on til you sort your shit out, whether that’s making up or deciding to go your separate ways.”
“That’s a fuckin’ ridiculous idea,” Ed snaps, because he can’t contradict the angry, sad, horny descriptor. Boy’s got that part down pretty accurate.
“Yes, it is!” Stede says. “Where on earth did you come up with something like that?”
Frenchie jumps in to answer this one. “Buttons told us a story about his mum tying him and his little sister together when they’d fight, til they made up.”
“Oh, and we take advice on interpersonal relations from whatever ocean-dwelling cryptid raised Buttons now, do we?”

She sees him before he sees her, which is almost a surprise, because he looks like the reason he’s here is because he knows Stede. So he’s a pirate. He’s looking at the painting she’s working on now: a lighthouse, again. This time, however, the ship is staying away. It’s a symbiotic relationship.
“You’re the Widow Bonnet, then.” the pirate says, before she announces herself.
Mary paints the man who comes to her studio asking about Stede, and tells him all about her late husband.
