“Sleep. I watch,” he warbles from his post at the door. The first thing he’s said to me in hours. We haven’t talked about anything yet, aside from his pushing to prove I wasn’t hiding more contraband. I scowl at him.
“Don’t want to.” I feel like one of my kids with the level of petulance that seeps into my voice. I miss my kids. I miss having a place. I have a place here, I need to accept it’s just… Different. Still, I’m not gonna listen to Rocky right now.
Rocky grumbles at me. “Scientists say Grace hasn’t slept in 32.6 hours.” Jeez, has it really been that long? I don’t think I’ve had an all-nighter that bad since college. “Cognitive impairment begins after only 24. Bad decisions, dangerous thoughts like you mention. Why you are sick.”
“You left me.” I didn’t mean to say that. Too late.
or Grace is having a hard time adjusting to life on Erid, and it only gets worse when Rocky disappears. They work it out.

I lived with this hunger long before the Hail Mary. This is nothing new. I’m fine.
Right up until Rocky asks another question.
“When last time you touch other human person skin, question?”
Oh. Oh no. “When I… a few days after I first woke up here.”
Rocky starts to relax for a split second, but then tightens when something occurs to him.
“Grace crewmates dead when you wake up. You said this, statement. You not even know your own name, remember nothing, see dead bodies, confirm?”
I nod, because if I open my mouth I will gag.
“When last time Grace touch ALIVE human person, question.”
I swallow thickly. I don’t answer aloud because I know Rocky can hear the hitch in my breath. My stomach churns with fresh bile. He senses my vital signs tick over into stress patterns and goes very, very still again.
“Grace. When last time, question.”
I clench my jaw so hard my temples ache, and beg him with my eyes to just stop.
“Grace. Please say not when… when Evil Stratt humans put you to sleep.”
I can taste grass.

Bright red lipstick framing bright white teeth, flashing a smile at me before she ducked into his car and they drove off. I watched them even after I couldn’t see them anymore.
I didn’t even know his name, my mom’s new boyfriend. But I hated him. Because he made her choose. Him or me.

‘To be fair,’ Adrian began, the chords tinged with amusement, ‘you can’t even win against either of us at regular chess, so I don’t see why this would have been any different.’
‘Shut up,’ Grace shot back cleverly.
‘You even had an advisor this time,’ Rocky said, still snickering. ‘You had Adrian as an advisor. And you still lost.’
Grace swivelled to glare daggers at him. ‘It’s 5D Chess with Multiverse Time Travel! Each game lasts, like, a million hours, and my brain checks out after the first ten!’
‘Yeah, we could tell.’
Adrian and Rocky are over at Grace's house for the night, and Adrian loves their idiots to death, even if they are idiots.

“Just answer,” I say, looking away from him. I can’t help but flush with embarrassment asking the question. It sounds stupid and cheesy coming out of my mouth but I have to know: is love truly constant throughout the universe? Is their love the same as ours? What does love mean for Eridians?
After the conversation about relativity, Grace and Rocky talk about love while making chain.

“Yeah, and I'm excited to meet them too, but after that!” Is this a translation error? A cultural miscommunication? How is Rocky not getting it? “You're partners. They're not going to want some alien around while you're, like… going on dates and all that.”
“Does not mean no time for Grace.” Rocky’s starting to sound frustrated. Part of me feels bad, but the rest is just as frustrated. “Why think this, question? On Earth, just abandon friends when have mate, question?”
It's so clearly a rhetorical question, to which the answer is obviously supposed to be no, of course not. I freeze up anyway.

The Eridian thrills a high sound that doesn’t get picked up by the translator which means that it has no clear meaning. Like when a human gasps or sucks in a deep breath. It actually sounds a little like that. When they notice that I’m staring straight at them they scramble back into their hiding spot and hold very still.
A child, I realize with a start.
That’s a child!
“Hey,” I call and the kid squeaks again. I was about to get to my feet but abort the movement and crawl closer on my hands and knees until I'm inches away from the xenonite wall. I wait and it takes me much too long to realize that they don’t have to peek around the corner to see if I’m still there.
“Hey there,” I try again, my voice low and calm. It’s my teacher voice, the one I use for shy and scared students.
Used.
The fact that I haven’t had to use it for years and it still comes to me automatically almost knocks the air out of my lungs but this is not about me, it’s about making sure the little pebble doesn’t die of fright from the scary alien. “Hi, I’m Grace. It’s alright, you don’t have to be scared.”

“I'm good. Just have a slight headache,” Grace muttered, knowing he wasn’t fooling Rocky by insisting he was totally and completely fine, “Gonna get some medication in me, lay down for a few minutes, then I’ll be right as rain.”
“Grace said body was good. Head pain was not mentioned. Rocky no understand rain statement; explain, question?”
Rocky rolled behind Grace as he started back toward the medbay, resigned to his fate as another pulse of pain shot through his skull. He tried to shake it off, clearing his throat, “Right as rain means…uh, ‘good as new,’ I guess? Does that make sense?”
He stumbled over a discarded jumpsuit on the floor, hissing when his already bruised knees dug into the metal floor. God, he was really stupid like this, huh?
“Grace wrong as rain now.”
(Grace has a migraine, Rocky helps as best as he can.)

Summary
The rest of Rocky's bulky little carapece situates itself in the curl of my body. I complain about his sharp edges just to annoy him. He stands his ground.
He's not sharp: the suit takes care of that. I am.
There's a little groove in my 8th rib on the left side I never noticed before. Now that the fat's gone, I can feel it. It's shaped like the concave slope of a red blood cell, and reminds me of a gravity well.
Grace is a little tired.

Of all things Grace didn’t want, he especially didn’t want Rocky’s help.
“Nope! You don’t need to help–I’m just…” He held his glasses up to inspect them. Well, at least Grace tried to inspect them, but he couldn’t freaking see. “I’m just cleaning up a bit before bed.”
It wasn’t a complete lie. He had been intending to clean up.
Grace moved his glasses between his fingers, feeling over what he knew was shattered glass. Great. Perfect.
(Grace breaks his one and only pair of glasses. Naturally, he doesn't tell Rocky this very important information.)

Summary
The notes blur together and you can't make sense of anything but how loud they are, all the words you've learned meaningless. You could go grab your laptop, but that would mean moving from the comfortable little ball you've curled yourself into, so that's not happening. Rocky lets out a piercing trill when all you do is stare blankly at him - that, you recognise. He's worried. When you flinch at the sound, he rolls closer.
Grace gets overstimulated. Rocky tries to help. It works out better than either of them expects.
