It should be hilarious when Dick gets de-aged: another brown-haired baby to throw into the playpen, this one no doubt climbing everything in sight and cheerfully babbling nonstop. Only Jason isn’t staring at a cheerful toddler. He’s looking down at a tiny, badly bruised child, shaking in his little Nightwing suit, staring up at Jason with poorly concealed terror.

It started slow, usually.
The headaches. It was the tiredness that preceded everything else — his body preparing for the onslaught of pain that’d last him for a day. Usually, he texted Bruce when a headache would take him out for the count, but… Spryal still left some untended, gaping wounds in his fragile chest, the size of Bruce’s relentless fists. Bruce didn’t know his routine, Bruce didn’t deserve to know his routine — let alone when he was at his most vulnerable.

He should call someone.
Babs, maybe. Or Wally. Or even Alfred— God, Alfred would know what to say. Maybe even Bruce himself. Just— just someone.
But he doesn't. Something’s telling him that he shouldn't.
It’s late anyway. No one’s awake. At least, that’s what he tells himself. He just needs to sleep it off and he’ll go back to normal. Whatever normal is.
Except sleep doesn't come.
He lies down eventually, staring up at the ceiling. The mask still clings to his face. He tells himself he’ll take it off after five minutes. Then ten. Then an hour.
He lies awake long enough to watch dawn leak through the blinds, turning the apartment from grey to gold. When his alarm goes off two hours later, he’s still in costume. His muscles ache as if he’s run a marathon.
Dick isn’t okay, even if he tells himself that he is. Jason and Bruce are there to help.

“Bruce, you would report parents like those to the police. And by the time I was with the Titans, I would too. And still, Bruce, still, I took it when you hurt me because—because I don’t know. Because maybe, somewhere along the way, I started pretending you weren’t my father.”
"Hurt you," Jason echoes, and now his voice isn't raspy because he's pretending to be Batman. Bruce hurt Dick. The first son, the favourite, the one most like him.
Bruce hurt him?
"Do you still not understand what you did? What you keep doing? ‘It is what it looks like.’ Funny how I only realised it after my death, after you beat me up and sent me away from my family.”
Dick stands up, all stiff movements. The light from outside hits him directly, and Jason realises he’s in a nightmare.
Jason was—he was dreaming. This—this man, hunched and shaking and bleeding—cannot be Dick. His brother’s face could never be dripping with blood from his father’s fists.
“Look. You’ve made me a victim,” Dick tells him.
OR
Dick finally realises Batman is an abusive piece of shit, and so do his brothers. What follows is never that simple.

“Dick Grayson.” The voice was barely more than a whisper, but it kept catching him off guard. He would be almost asleep, so close to letting himself relax just enough to collapse into any semblance of rest, and then he would hear it. After checking for any sort of device that could be stowed away in his apartment and half-way destroying each room looking for someone hiding, he gave up on trying to find the source.
After three days, he had turned off his phone. He thought that it would be better to just turn it off than smash it when the next person tried to call him.

Dick Grayson has a manic episode, and does not have a good time. Somehow, Jason is the most capable of handling the situation.

On the fourth day, it becomes clear that Joe is organizing something—more muscle than usual, a few more Black Mask affiliates than there should be. The few glimpses of Joe that Dick gets, he’s on his phone, speaking rapidly and gesturing emphatically.
On the fifth day, everything is quiet. No one comes, no one goes.
On the sixth day, Tim calls Dick: they’re not sure where Jason is. And yeah, maybe that’s just normal, and they’re not panicking yet. But they’re not sure where he is. And they’re about to start looking.
And on the seventh day, Bruce shows up at his door with Jason standing next to him, pale and hacking out a cough, putting too much weight on Bruce’s shoulder, and says: “I need to ask you a favor.”

Summary
Flying back to Cherry Street, weaving reckless in the dark, it comes down to this: Dick is the only one of his siblings that Jason has any real claim on. Dick is the only one of that whole mess of victims to Batman's cult of self-immolation who belongs to Jason. Even more than that - Dick is the only person in the world who he shares a parent with, who knows what it meant to be the Robin to Batman of nearly ten years ago.
It's just not the same anymore.
So if Dick fucking kicks it, Jason's the only one left. Jason becomes an only child. Jason becomes the last of his kind. Jason becomes the sole keeper of that memory, of a brotherhood shared under a man who no longer exists. There is no way to replace Dick, because the world that they lived in together is gone, and can never give Jason a surrogate.
The Red Hood pulls the thread on a mystery big enough to bridge the distance between two cities, two brothers: The plot they unravel is far deeper and darker than a garden-variety drug trafficking scheme. A story about siblingship, hauntings, and rivers.

Death had tainted him. Dick knew that for sure. He wasn’t pulling his punches, not that much, not anymore—he ignored the news headlines of ‘NIGHTWING BRUTALISES COMMON STREET THIEF’ because he hadn’t been some common street thief. He had cornered a woman, not a poor woman, just a woman, who had nothing besides the clothes on her back, and threatened to keep her mouth quiet for her.
The man had deserved the death that came later. And Dick didn’t feel guilty about it. Sure, maybe a flicker of something, but—people like that? There’s no rehabilitation for them. There’s no hope. There’s some— some sick desire somewhere inside them, to maim and cause agony, cause harm to innocents.
But… Dick was not innocent, unlike what his logic suggested. He was something else. A toxin, he was poisonous.

When asked, the majority of the people of Gotham never mention Nightwing. They say Batman, because he was the first. Red Hood, because he murders without preamble. Red Robin, because he knows too much. Most will even say Robin before they say Nightwing, because murder is still ingrained into his bones.
But the oldest Gothamites, the ones who know Nightwing was the first Robin — the ones who saw Robin decay into Nightwing — they know.
Nightwing has always been the most frightening.
