    “I told him you could help.” Christopher says with such confidence that Eddie’s heart jumps into his throat. Because to Eddie, this isn’t a fight he can win. “Please help him.”

    “Christopher.” Eddie whispers and looks back down at the likely dying wild animal his son brought home.

    “Please?” Christopher’s eyes are wide and wet and looking at him with such hope.

    What can Eddie do? Say no? Of course not. “I’ll try, but Mijo, it looks pretty hurt.”

    “You can save him.” Christopher insists. “I know you can.”

    __

    Or: Christopher saves a fox on a field trip that ends up not being a fox after all.

    Eddie Diaz has his hands full. He lost his home in the tsunami, he's been transferred to the 118 during the aftermath, and the man who saved Chris and Abuela is still unconscious in the ICU. And now, on top of everything, he's finding post-it notes in someone else's writing reminding him of things nobody else in the world could know about, in places only he has been.

    His clothes cling damply to him—t-shirt, uniform pants, his boots long-since kicked off and lost to the depths. He doesn't know how long he's been out here, or how much daylight he has left. How much daylight they have left to search for him, if anyone is even looking.

    They're looking for him. He believes that. He does.

    It's just—he's been treading water for a long time.

    Summary

    Sequel to "With a Friend in the Dark.”

    It's been weeks since Buck's cancer diagnosis, and in most ways, things are looking up. The idea of resuming chemo still frightens him, but not nearly as much as it did last time. This time, he has people on his side. But Buck is about to learn that treatment is just the first challenge. Money troubles, identity crises, learning what real love means for the first time at twenty-seven... who knew cancer would be so complicated?

    Eddie, meanwhile, is still wrestling with his guilt and anger over how he handled things the first time. Being there for Buck? That's a given. Figuring out what it means to be Buck's friend through his cancer treatments, in the wake of all that's happened between them? That seems a lot trickier. Even more so when Eddie starts to realize that anger and guilt might not be the only feelings he's having.

    Summary

    He knows he could have called Maddie and she would have been there, though the memory of her disappointment last time stopped him. As for everyone else—even if he weren’t prohibited from talking to them by his lawyer, Buck doubts anyone would have come. The last time they talked was when they ran into each other in the grocery store a week back, and, since Buck is not eager for a repeat of that interaction, he doesn’t even consider calling anyone in to hold his hand for what is, he tells himself, probably just another little blip on his road back to the 118.

    He is able to convince himself of this up until the moment Dr. Gutierrez walks into his room and says, “Well, Evan, you just can’t seem to do anything the easy way, can you?”

    Because, as it turns out, there is a circumstance under which a tiny clot that doesn’t cause you to vomit blood in front of all of your friends and family is worse than three big ones that do: that circumstance is called ‘being on blood thinners.’

    In the midst of the lawsuit, Buck is diagnosed with cancer. Dropping the lawsuit is easy. Finding forgiveness, less so.

    Buck felt pain stab through his abdomen as he stood. Wide eyes around the table watched him and the blood seeped through his jacket coating his hands.

    “This..was not supposed..to happen”

    His words slurred, he could not get enough air. He gasped and winced as it caused pain to shoot across his torso. It was just a scratch. He collapsed to the ground, Chim and Eddie only barely able to cushion the fall. The last thing he saw was Eddie's horrified face before he blacked out.

    Summary

    “Hey, Eddie.” Buck grabbed him by the arm and pulled them to a halt just before catching up with the others, leaning in close to his ear. “Take care out there, okay?”
    “Hey, you might not know this,” Eddie whispered conspiratorially, looking around like he was about to give away a very important secret, “but I’m actually a firefighter, done the training and everything.” Buck could recognize the humor in his voice, but he didn’t feel like returning the sentiment. Not this time.
    Of course Buck trusted Eddie’s abilities as a firefighter and he must’ve known as much, but this wasn’t about that.
    “It’s… I don’t know Eddie, something’s
    wrong.” He pressed, but Eddie just scoffed and pulled out of Buck’s hand so he could turn to face him fully and put his own hands onto Buck’s shoulders.
    “Look around, Buck. Everything is wrong. Having a sense of doom in a situation like this is normal and you
    know that.” He leveled him with a questioning gaze and Buck nodded a little. “We’re just gonna have to do our best, alright?”

    Or

    During a search and rescue, Eddie disappears without a trace, leaving Buck to grapple with the sudden possibility of a life without him.

    And Eddie, working at dispatch, could only listen as the man he loves is washed away by the element that seems determined to take him to a watery grave, one way or another.

    “I think I can reach my helmet,” Eddie said as he strained for the item, finally able to scoot it within reach, “aha got it! Now we can have some light in here.”

    Eddie fumbled with the switch on the helmet light.

    Buck sucked in a sharp breath when he realized, “No Eddie, don’t.”

    It was too late. Buck couldn’t stop what was coming, and neither could Eddie.

    ~~~~~~~
    Eddie gets stuck in a collapsing building and Buck runs back in for him. While they wait to be rescued, Buck distracts Eddie and keeps him calm. So Buck's okay right?
    Buck never meant to be a hero that day. He just saw a kid alone in the park, looking too much like someone he used to be—and someone he couldn't ignore. What begins as a gut feeling turns into a nightmare as Buck and young Evan are kidnapped by a predator hiding in plain sight.
    Trapped in a basement with no way out and no certainty of rescue, Buck has only his instincts, his trauma, and his stubborn will to survive. But saving Evan means revisiting his own darkest memories—and the pain doesn’t stop once they're found.
    "Eds."
    Eddie twists his head around to look at Buck. "Yeah?"
    Buck slightly sways on his feet and a mumbled word leaves his lips. "Catch me."
    And Buck's knees go weak as his eyes flutter close, for the second time today.
    Almost like an instinct, Eddie takes one full step and holds Buck— Buck's head lolling against his chest and his form completely pliant, and he makes the two of them sit on the ground.
    It starts with a headache.
    It starts with a headache. And it ends as he falls to the ground, lock jawed, the world fading away.
    . . .
    Look.
    Buck knows as well as anyone the dangers of repeated concussions. He was a college football player; he’s followed the development of the concussion stories as they’ve come out. And yeah, between his childhood recklessness (which has bled into adult recklessness), a few workplace incidents including a notable day with a hoarder house and a bowling ball, and his general affinity for being caught in unfortunate positions, he figures he’s had his fair share of concussions. But they’ve never really been in such close succession that he’s worried about them.
    Not really.
