For a brief moment, the quiet patrol felt less ordinary—like the night itself was waiting for something to happen.
As Nom turned his gaze away from the quiet streets, a sudden sound tore through the stillness of the night.
A scream.
It was sharp and raw, echoing out from the direction of the mage’s hidden house and cutting through the calm like a blade. The wind seemed to falter for a moment, the rustling leaves falling quiet as the sound carried across the moonlit courtyard.
Nom stopped instantly.
The scream wasn’t one of anger or battle. It was the kind that came from deep panic—the kind dragged out of someone who had just been ripped from a terrible dream. The kind that left the air trembling long after it faded.
His eyes snapped back toward the house, now feeling far less peaceful than it had moments before. The shadows around it looked deeper, heavier, as if the night itself had drawn closer.
And Nom knew exactly whose voice it was.

He stands behind him, leaving little kisses across his shoulders. "So cute, my pet," he croons, grabbing a hairbrush. "We're gonna dress you up all nice and pretty for me, ok?"
The fledgling nods, purring as he feels the brush's bristles glide through his hair pleasantly. Scott continues brushing far past what was actually necessary, simply letting Avid enjoy the feeling. After a bit, Scott grabs a pretty purple ribbon, using it to tie his hair back in a low ponytail.
He made Avid turn to look at himself in the mirror, "Look at how pretty you are, darling," he purrs, sliding a thumb across his bottom lip, making him take a sharp inhale, "your cute kissable lips, your lovely dark hair, your vibrant eyes with those pretty long lashes. I bet you'd look so beautiful crying for me," he leans in to hiss the last sentence into his ear making Avid gasp, keening lightly.
He whimpers as Scott tugs at the leash, guiding him to stand up from the chair. The tension had been brewing for days now; he wanted Scott to touch him so badly.

Ever since Louis died, Owen’s nightmares have stayed consistent: a white-haired man with Louis’s face tied to a pyre and burnt alive, flames licking up the peeling wood of a building; screams, blood, claws, hell opening under him, hell opening within him. He’s memorised the settings he sees in these phantasmagoria: cobweb-filled forests, leviathan bodies of water, a walled town he fears atavistically, inexplicably.
His research of the place in his mind has matched with the description of the ancient, mythical town of Oakhurst. The one filled with vampires, if the myths are true.
Whoever’s given him this book can’t have seen what he dreamed of, can they? He opens it and coughs, flapping the dust out of his face.
At fifteen, Owen meets Louis, who changes his life.
At thirty-four, Owen lives a magically mundane life with Legundo, until a book shows up on his doorstep.

His white hair was tousled, and a faint scar marred his jaw from some recent skirmish.
