“Told you I ain’t what you were lookin’ for.”
Rook laughs, unable to stop the wide smile from spreading across her face. “Nah, you absolutely were,” she says softly, checking to make sure her tits were back inside her tank top.
He snorts, but his lips slightly curve upward. “You go on and have yourself a nice night, darlin’.”
For some reason this makes her cheeks turn pink. A minute ago he was about to enter her and now she’s feeling shy? She can tell there’s a glint of amusement in his eyes as he watches her begin to back away. It’s highly unlikely that she’ll ever see him again, but for some reason she has this tiny suspicion she will. So Rook musters some of that boldness from earlier and speaks her truth.
“I will, and I hope you do too. But you should know…I’m not finished with you just yet.”
The man’s eyes widen just a bit and he lets out a soft chuckle as he flicks the embers from his cigarette. “Well is that so?”
She grins at him, shaking her head affirmatively as she continues backing away.
His lips twitch up in a small smile. “Hmm, perhaps the stars will align.”
3 years later, Rook is shocked to see her redheaded stranger once again...behind Joseph Seed.

The girl that comes into view is hardly girl and more creature. From her limbs sprout glossy blue feathers, her eyes even from here visibly the beady black nothing that a bluebird’s are. Her hair, bright orange like the feathers at her breast, is pinned up, and around the borders of her face sprout feathers that frame her features. It is a beautiful amalgam of human and avian, and it is terrible, and Wirt can’t decide whether to step back from the window or toward it, mouth fallen open in awe.
Or, Wirt and Greg move to a new city, and next door to their new home is a garden, and in it resides a girl unlike anyone Wirt has ever seen. She is beautiful, sort of. She is entirely enchanting. He can't not save her.
