“Other side,” Sabo grabs onto Koala’s arm to pull her away. The flames are starting to die down, short lived as they are, but it’s definitely safer for them to go towards the opposite of the fire. When they emerge from the other side of the alley however, they could see a figure to the far right of them, someone fighting another devil fruit user, hands ablaze and laughing in reckless abandon.
It stops Sabo in his tracks.
The world comes to a standstill.
Paint this in memory , it tells him.
Ace's laughter rings in his head. It's a distant echo of a past that's no longer kept in a box locked beneath his own staggering guilt. He’s suddenly aware of their distance; Twenty metres to cover an eight year void, long careful strides to meet his purpose.
It's all in front of him now, laid out in the form of a boy thought dead, all laugh lines and fire.
"Ace," Sabo chokes out in disbelief. No one hears him, the sound of the fire too loud, too bright.
It’s red that coloured the world in that instant. Like sunrise on a familiar harbour, like someone waving him goodbye. It’s his own silhouette backed by the blistering glow of the morning sun. It’s Ace sinking down the ocean to escape it.
But this isn't Ace, is it?
He's light on his feet and he swings his fists with a precision Sabo's unfamiliar with, and it's like he's dancing in his own fire, the damned thing. He's completely in his element. There's joy in his eyes as he fights, but it's not heavy and dark and marred with some twisted sense of need to prove his worth, he's-
And Sabo's chest feels tight.
It's Ace, but it isn't Ace. This is Ace unburdened by the weight of his father's legacy, Ace without that phantom crown. It's a boy who's never had to listen to a room full of drunks wishing that he shouldn't have been born. This boy doesn't believe his every waking moment is time borrowed and wasted. This is Ace - lighter and happier than Sabo had ever seen him in his memory.
For a moment, Sabo thinks of making Ace remember. For a moment, Sabo thinks it'd be the worst thing he could do.
But Sabo also remembers Luffy crying in the candlelight, red-cheeked and miserable, muffling his sobs under gangly arms because of a nightmare.
Ace wouldn’t want me to cry, he’d say, biting his lip as tears well up anyways. Sabo had to coax the straw hatted boy from his spot in the corner of the treehouse and let Luffy latch on to him for the rest of the night until he’d sleep. Fists curled into the lapels of Sabo’s new coat, Luffy’s brows drew sadness as he cried, and Sabo let the tears soak into the fabric.
Where’s Ace? , he’d weep in between his dreams, the only sound Sabo could hear on some days. Where is he?
The present rushes back to him in a gasp. It spits him out, and Sabo could feel his legs running before he knows it, his breath heaving out of his chest.
This isn’t Ace.
This isn’t Ace but—
It’s Ace all the same, and what a selfish brother, to leave them alone in that treehouse, to leave Sabo with Luffy without so much of a letter - that bastard - !
(Gradually, with a drum-like rhythm, Sabo feels his answer more than he hears it. He’s here, he’s here, he’s here. Hope takes root and all his grievances seem insignificant. Not for the first time but definitely in a long while, Sabo wants nothing more than to feel complete.)
So Sabo swings his pipe, blocks a strike aimed at the fire-user’s blind side, and slides into formation like he’d always belonged. Fire Fist - Ace - looks at him like he hadn’t expected a revolutionary to join the fight, but, well. Sabo can make the exception, just this once.
He shoots a grin to the center of the flames.
“Mind a helping hand?”
