Maybe he was the reason no one would hire them — someone ‘made’ for a liar. Maybe they decided they wanted nothing to do with him, swore to kill him if he dared to show his face to them. Despised him with their very being, wished to strangle him with their two hands.
If he still had a soulmate alive somewhere, they would have lied at least once until now. He would have received a sign. The possibility they were alive, or even existed, seemed too low to consider.
At least, one less person to burden.

Aventurine, unfortunately, has a magnetic quality to him, one that makes it hard to let him leave Sugilite’s sight.
That might be his greed though, he never wants to be parted from his most prized possessions.
Sugilite does not consider himself a gambling man, but he takes a chance, a risk (a very badly calculated risk), when he invites Aventurine along on a boring job. He tells himself it's simply for entertainment. Beaches and pools are not Sugilite's ideal way of relaxing, so what better way to fix that problem than bringing along his own pet.
But he doesn't account for how spending an entire week in Aventurine's presence will make him feel. And feeling is never a good thing when it comes to Sugilite.

Ratio leaned forward with a scathing expression as he spat, “You don’t care that you’re hurting yourself, because there isn't even anybody there to hurt. You’re so far into this farce, this character that you play, nothing matters to you anymore. So fine, Aventurine, keep it up. Don’t worry about getting better for me, or you, or anybody. Just remember the next time you're running around these galas and dinners and parties, and you’re all done up on the outside like the clamorous little peacock you are, with your chains and your rings and all this frivolous fabric,” he said, flicking the fur that was draped around Aventurine's neck, “Inside, you’re the same empty, pathetic man you always have been. You cannot purchase what your soul lacks.”

Summary
“What’s got you thinking so hard?” Aventurine drawls, making Ratio glance up from where he’s been writing down multiple notes. Soon, they will head off to Penacony, and take up the stance of being enemies again.
For now, while they are not at odds, they can let down guards for just a little while. They do not have to pretend like they haven’t kissed in the safety of Ratio’s room, with the lights dimmed and eyes closed as a symbol of trust. They don’t have to pretend like Ratio’s hand doesn’t linger when they shake hands, or deny the fact that they look into one another’s eyes for just a little too long.
Here, they are equals. Lovers, even. Sort of. There’s never been words put to the kind of relationship that they have. They share kisses, soft words, and warm nights, and what more do they need? if it is just them, then it is more than enough.
“The future,” is what Ratio settles on, returning to making notes down on the paper. “And you, of course, dear gambler.”

the whole worldbuilding was so easy to follow and i love the deep market so so much like hell yeah. this was so cool a concept, and presented so believably. really wanted to finish but we were going to and airport and i was scared to read fanfiction with hoyoverse characters in fear someone sees and judges. so i swapped to dc and unfortunately that took the wind out of the sails for this one and i havent had time between fixations for this since
