Summary
No, it couldn’t have been a dream. Every detail was etched into his mind, every daily figure, every death they represented. The pain, the way it had felt to die, seemed as though it had just been plucked from nerves still recoiling in its absence. He felt at his chest, drew a whole, sound breath under the splay of his fingers, his stomach comfortably full, with none of famine’s claws embedded in it yet.
Yet. Was that- what was he taking those memories to be, then? Some sort of premonition? He’d never believed in such things, but their vividity absolutely refused to let him dismiss them as the byproduct of a brief doze, the random mutterings of his subconscious. Something remarkable had happened to him, and he was thousands of kilometres away from anyone who could have helped him decipher it.

Summary
The blooming twyre dizzies, but the point of touch is grounding.
His words, still, come clouded and vague, “This has happened before.”
“Not like this,” Artemy’s voice is rough and curt. Hopeful again. “You never stayed.”
He blinks. “I can’t stay. It’s not how this works.”
[Or; Daniil starts remembering.]

“Well, I’ve always said you’re blind. I—” It can’t leave his throat. Sounds off and empty, stilted like borrowed words. Poorly delivered. “This town isn’t mine anymore. Not human anymore.”
Artemy’s face twists. “Danya. We’re not—”
Human, goes unspoken. The simplicity of it undoes his resolve.
I am human, he had shouted to Clara, days or years or ages ago. As if it ever mattered. Cogito ergo sum.
Sentio, ergo sum humanum.
He raises his eyes. “… No,” Daniil says, “I suppose not.”
Artemy smiles.

Summary
“I want,” the officer says, walking closer to Artemy, who tears his gaze away from Daniil in favour of the floor. Let them think his panic is because of the general situation, but they absolutely cannot be given the ammunition of figuring out the full extent of their relationship. “For you to explain why, after a year of searching, we find a wanted man in your house. Or do you not know how that came to be, Artemy Isidorovich?”
Any hopes he could possibly have had left of getting out of this with both of them intact disappears. Artemy doesn’t know what to do, he can’t talk to people like this, not with the finesse you need to get out of this kind of situation – Artemy knows how to work with reputation and favours, necessity or hard work earning respect, he has no idea how to make a man like this officer change his mind on executing them both.
OR: After a year, everything breaks; the Powers that Be were never going to let them get away, and Artemy struggles to breathe against the powerlessness as he has to figure out a way to put everything back together.
OR 2: The chase is over, the rat is caught. You can find him, but it will take time, and it will hurt.

Summary
The Town and the Kin, an Odongh had once whispered, were sewn together wrong. The plague had torn those old connections apart, and it was left to Artemy Burakh to suture the severed halves back together in a better way. Blood could, and would, flow through them as one common body. And it would, and must, start with solidarity.
This, too, could be its own form of utopia.
—
In which Artemy unionises the butchers and workers, strikes against the rulers, and finds a new way to unite the Town.

Summary
So what if his former associates thought of him as a lowlife? So what if he was disgraced from academia? So long as he was still welcomed back into the town-on-Gorkhon, nothing else mattered.
With quivering hands, he picked up the letter and carefully opened it as though he was afraid something would jump out at him from inside it. But nothing had changed, it was the exact same as when he had first read it a week ago.Bachelor Daniil Dankovsky,
There is another way.
— Victoria Olgimskaya Sr., The Light Mistress.Yes, there was hope for him still, and hope he would cling to till death did them part.
———
Over a year later, Daniil Dankovsky returns to the Town, with a letter from a dead woman and a ticking time bomb inside his own body, in a last-ditch effort to defeat death.

Summary
“But what if I change into something worse?” Daniil bowed his head, gaze dropping to the Crowstone’s back. “What if I become something unrecognizable? I already feel it sometimes. Like the real Bachelor Dankovsky died a long time ago, and I’m just the thing that stepped out of his grave and kept walking.”
or
There are consequences to meddling with time. Bachelor Daniil Dankovsky finds himself trapped in a special kind of hell, searching endlessly for the solution to an impossible task while memories of his past slowly slip away. A single frail human cannot be expected to overcome such a terrible foe, regardless of what special power he may have stumbled into by "happenstance". He will have to unite with others if any piece of himself is to survive past the twelfth day.

Summary
Artemy Burakh,
I hope this letter finds you well; or finds you at all, for that matter. Considering the circumstances of our last meeting, I did not have time to become familiar with the quality of your town’s postal system. Hopefully, it is looking better there these days.
I’m writing to you on a matter that I fear nobody else can assist me with. I have recently come down with a strange affliction, and have run out of possible explanations. Be assured, it is not the return of the Pest nor any of its derivatives, however, I fear you may regardless be the only one with insight into my present condition.
I am aware we have not always gotten along in the past, and I am to blame for a large sum of that animosity, so I pray now that you find it in your heart to offer me, at the least, your counsel. The train that I will take will arrive on the fifteenth of February. Should you decide to accept my plea, I would ask you kindly to meet me then.
Until then, Haruspex.
With Respect,
Daniil Dankovsky, Bachelor of Medicine.

Summary
With practiced ease Artemy cuts the ventricles free and lifts the heart from its cage. Still warm, he holds the prize out and for a moment he can pretend the pounding in his chest is coming from the organ he gingerly handles.
Slowly, Dankovsky reaches out to take it, eyes confused, evidently feeling the tension in the air. When the heart is held safely in his hands, Artemy squeezes his own eyes shut and for one moment lets himself wish.
He lurches forward and stands back up. Then he addresses the worms behind them: “Tell everyone it is done.”
---
Artemy receives his inheritance on day one. Although some of the Kin aren’t happy with his return, it does make a few things easier – like when Daniil is caught performing an autopsy. Only, he wishes someone had told him what consequences marrying the man would have.- Language:

Summary
Daniil cleared his throat.
“The Powers That Be are the embodiment of order. There are always threads in the universe that dare to hang loose, and like a moth to a flame, they are always there to tug on them. The Powers That Be unravel everything simply to see what falls.”
“So what? The plague is... it's all gone.”
Daniil noted the slight tremor in Artemy’s voice. Artemy Burakh also lost many things in the chaos. He must also suffer from the nightmares. He must.
“They wanted me to die in the plague along with Aglaya and Block and yet, the more information they received from us, the more they urged us to cure the incurable. To preserve the town. Do you hear me? They will not leave a town of miracles alone. It may not be right away… but they will send someone.”
-
There's no choice but to build a new life and live with the consequences, and so they do. But the events of the plague left deep wounds with the pain and fear of loss ever looming.

Is it gay to triage your colleague? I mean you’re literally putting your hand inside another man.
Is it gay to softly speak the syllables of an oppressed people’s language while your colleague smiles, plague shutting his organs down one by one?
I mean you literally have another man’s Tongue in your mouth. -

Summary
When all the kicked up sand finally settles, the town's new authority revolves around an ascendant Changeling-- leaving room in the script only for an acquiescent Haruspex and an obsolescent Bachelor. From the breaking of frameworks emerges an incompatible yet inextricable pair; a malunion; a chimera. A common enough yield around these parts.
Pestilence cures loneliness, but if there is a shortage of sickness at hand, then love and sadomasochism can be makeshift workalikes.
