Summary
Anger is something Jack knows well. It burns in his veins, rage lingering in the back of his mind. Fear keeps it in check and Kindness tries to calm it, but it’s the partner he knows best. He doesn’t have to think when Anger comes. It’ll put words in his mouth, force behind his fists; it’ll take his hand in its and make sure he survives, whether he wants to or not.
Davey doesn’t deserve this, Kindness reminds him. But Anger has its arm slung around his shoulders and Fear is clutching onto his sleeve and he doesn’t care. Can’t.
The wind sweeps across the penthouse, picking up dust and dirt and blowing feathers into the alley below. Davey doesn’t try to get up, doesn’t even try to move. Frozen like one of those stupid rabbits, wide eyed and teary.
Didn’t he realize the world doesn’t care about tears?
“Do you?” He hisses, feeling his nails dig into his skin. “Tell me. Tell me about what you know, won’t you?
Or, I really like the song You Don’t Know from Next to Normal. Then I decided that Crutchie would decidedly not be fine after his stint at the Refuge and that Jack should be stressed. How is he not more stressed on a daily basis? I would be so stressed. So, SO much stress.

“What got you so panicked?” Jack reaches out to poke Dave’s temple. “Lemme in that head of— yours.” In Dave's lean-away from Jack’s jabbing finger, the light is able to catch the line of skin beneath his slightly-unbuttoned shirt. It's just enough to make visible the speckled, rosening, clear-as-day outline of teeth on Dave’s lower neck.
“I give you all my ideas already,” Davey answers, fully oblivious to the realization Jack is battling against. “You can’t be any more in my head,” which would be a real flattering statement, if he’d said it any time but now, Jack thinks. Jack thinks, maybe it’s for the best he’s not in Dave’s head, because he’s not sure he can handle the full truth of the situation, right now. “Look, it doesn’t matter. You’re coming for dinner, right?”
“Nah,” says Jack, not feeling the slightest bit hungry anymore. “I got someplace to be.”
Davey is popular. Jack is jealous.

There, Jack meets a boy named Davey, whom he develops romantic feelings for, though he doubts the boy likes him back. Davey develops a crush on Jack, too, but is also unsure if the feeling is mutual. At the Manhattan Boarding School, the Newsies face all sorts of new challenges ranging from self-discovery to blooming romance to the typical struggles of academic life. Some trouble arises when the boys meet the Delancey brothers, the biggest bullies at the school. Witness the Newsies' progress through love, conflict, and curricular life.

Two months after the strike, Jack Kelly abruptly packs everything he owns and purchases a one way ticket to Santa Fe. As he leaves, he tells his boys to wait for his letters, promises to write by January. By the end of March, there's still no word from him, and most of the Newsies are convinced he's dead.
Crutchie Morris, on the other hand, has never been so furious in his life. At Jack for abandoning them, at the boys for thinking he's dead, and at himself, for not going with him. So, when Racetrack Higgins comes to him with a pocketful of winnings and an offer to head west and find his brother, he accepts. They set out for Santa Fe, and Crutchie is determined to kick Jack's (100% alive) ass into next week.
