The Los Angeles heat didn’t arrive so much as it hung thick, indifferent, a film over the mouth that made talking feel like the start of drowning. The second scene was a one-bedroom on Orange Grove: a stucco building the color of cheap oatmeal, two floors, bars on the windows for an optimism that wasn’t earned. By nine in the morning, uniforms were loudening the air with short phrases that all meant the same thing: nothing adds up.

The chain seems tacky and weird, you frown and find that your teeth have bitten into your lip and there's blood on your own tongue. Surely it doesn't take a genius to figure out how fucked up this is! But no one listens to Misa-Misa; no one ever listens to the pretty face. At least you're not too worried about Light. More or less, Naomi portrays herself as neutral about Beyond’s fixation. She never complains when Beyond stops in the meat section of the grocery store to stare, but she hardly ever waits up for her. She lets Beyond pause horror movies to gripe about the inaccuracy of the fake blood, but unless it makes the film look downright cheap, it doesn’t matter much to her either way.
Naomi is, however, not indifferent about blood. Not even close. Aside from herself — and Beyond is a statistical anomaly, see, Blood Kinks Georg, should not be counted — she has never met anyone quite as infatuated with blood as Naomi.

“Should I be offended that I’ve been mistaken for him?” asks not-Ryuzaki, pushing a thumb into his lower lip, eyes suddenly aglow with mirth.
“You’re not a weird depressed detective freak,” Misa dismisses. He does seem close — just missing the second and third words in that phrase — but he’s so much more tolerable than the real Ryuzaki that she is willing to overlook this. “You actually go outside, for one thing.”
Or: the one where Misa runs into a stranger at the shopping mall who, weirdly enough, looks just like L. Which means she has to introduce them!
