But, please.” Sirius stared at him like he was prey, her body completely still. “Please, don’t kill me. It would make Dad, Rachel” — Lear’s throat flared up in pain, forcing him to pause for a few seconds — “and Sawyer— it would make them all so sad. They want us to live. They want us to be… happy!”
“We can never be happy,” Sirius declared. “They taught us that. We have to be quiet, we have to be focused, we have to be cruel. How could you forget so fast? You’re the prince. I’m just a beast who should shut up and let the humans speak.”
Or: after his time with his tutors, Lear has become Separated from his daemon. Once, they were the same person, but after this experience they’ve been split in two. One of them wants to find a way to live happily, while the other wants to be exactly what the world expects of them.
