Agust Kline is at risk of losing his status as an independence after a wellness check finds him unfit to live on his own. Now at risk of either becoming a Floret for an Affini or even being given class O xeno drugs as the Affini find him a danger to himself and others, he is given one last chance. Doctor Philobirkin, a behavioral scientist specializing in human interactions and behaviors, sees to it to give that last chance to Agust with a promise that in time he'll be given his status as an independent back if he can prove he can live on his own effectively. Failing this, he will be given to a loving Affini to ensure he is taken care of for the rest of his days.

Each ship disabled has suffered zero casualties, yet these attacks still mark the largest series of defeats in the Compact's time within the Milky Way. Even more confusingly, the force responsible consists of just a single ship; a vessel by the name of the Rending Talon, captained by an enigmatic individual referring to themselves as Raqi Marr the Simurgh.
