And with that blessing, the two remained connected. So Tui used her powers to reach out and grasp that connection as tightly as she could.

Summary
Ozai had never been a loving father, not only to Zuko. He just didn’t have it in him to love. He desired power, so he respected Azula - needed her. He did not love her.
But that was exactly the difference between the two siblings, while Azula had been in the presence of indifference - a possible liking - Zuko wasn’t just subject to a lack of love. No, he faced hatred. Pure disdain.
But it was three years ago that Ozai first left a visible mark on the boy, leaving a scar for the world to see. Shaming him, hurting him and challenging him to death, at once. Publicly humiliating him in a duel meant as a display of respect between two matched opponents, rivals.
And since then, Ozai had grown in aggression, in his abuse.
That's why Zuko had to leave.
OR: In this universe, Zuko was never banished. Instead, he was subject to three more years of abuse, and it's this abuse that causes him to come to his senses, all on his own, and join the Avatar.

Summary
After the events of War Crimes, Sokka and Zuko have escaped Zhao’s warship and are fleeing across the Earth Kingdom. As well as unfamiliar terrain, they have to navigate their shared trauma, work out where they fit into the war, and their place in each others lives.
Sokka is aware that being friends with the enemy is going to bring complications, but he probably should have guessed that being friends with Zuko in particular, was going to be a bit like dunking your head repeatedly into a bucket of angry Fire Ferrets.
Katara is also grappling with the confusion of befriending an enemy, something that doesn’t prove as difficult as she had expected with the bond of shared, furious grief bridging old wounds. (Learning a new way to look at her bending doesn't hurt either)
Azula, struggling with the Fire Lord’s mistrust, encounters a few nasty surprises and has to make some difficult decisions. Luckily, she is a great deal better at making sensible choices than her brother.
Her father may have made a slight tactical error.

There are risks. Practical risks, like flammable items becoming damaged or their literal treehouse burning down. And indirect risks, like what if they’re wrong about him being a nobody? What if the little kidnappee is important enough for someone to go looking for him? It’s one thing to weigh the life of a firebender. It’s another thing entirely to consider risking the lives of your team for the bender in question. If taking a risk for a stranger, much less a fire stranger is what does them in in the end, Jet will never forgive himself.

Summary
Zuko is honestly doing fine on his own. Sure, he's getting thinner. And maybe he's a bit battered from dodging the high bounty the Blue Spirit has been awarded with, (some say) courtesy of the Fire Lord. But he's figuring a lot of this stuff out for the first time and he's nothing if not persistent. He will continue to try until something gives, regardless of if it's him or his obstacles.
Except this Jet guy is kind of making it hard. Zuko keeps thinking he understands him and then he does something weird again and Zuko's thrown for a loop. He keeps wanting to let his guard down, but every day he becomes more sure that the thing Jet hates more than anything is who he truly is.

The shadow also splits their sword in two, and does it in a very, very familiar way.
Jet doesn’t have time to let himself recognize why it’s familiar, he knows. This is all going to go to shit if he does. He doesn’t know why it’s all going to go to shit, but it is.
So he doesn’t, because he knows how to survive.
