Lev wasn’t hers by blood either but she imagined what she felt for him must be what most parents feel for their children. She’d give up anything for him and that would include a cure too, she thinks, and she can’t help but wonder when she started thinking this way. She remembered encouraging her father with what he was doing, telling her she’d want to make that sacrifice if she was immune.
But Lev was different.
Perhaps in part, it was due to him being the only thing she had left now. But still she’d given up everything for him even before that was the case and gone against the Wolves to protect a Seraphite. Was she as terrible as Joel was for feeling this way? She’d realised fairly quickly that him being dead hadn’t made her feel any better but did she deserve to suffer the same way she’d felt he did, had ensured he did?

As Lev sleeps, Abby ponders on parenthood and a newfound understanding of Joel. Mostly an Abby character study really.

Desperation drives Abby and all that remains of the Catalina Fireflies to follow rumors of a person spreading immunity to the cordyceps infection. She isn’t entirely surprised when that person turns out to be Ellie, but it doesn’t make it any easier to ask her for help.
Against all her preconceptions about the woman, she does.
By now both of them have learned that the way forward isn’t by chasing the past, or running from it. But when forced to coexist in the same community, they have to at least confront it. For the sake of the people they love, they have to put it behind them once and for all.
And maybe, for the sake of themselves… build something new between them.

The sight of Abby makes her sick, and she is ready to bolt. At the same time, it’s not the anger and rage she had felt for the past three years. It’s just anguish. It’s just Joel’s face flashing behind her eyes. His old, wrinkly face pulled in a smirk. Half of his face is gone as he lies dead on a concrete floor, and Ellie tries to wake him up like he’s not missing half of his brain. She’s just tired.
The girl stares at her like she’s unsure of what she sees. Then, something wakes up in her as she scrambles to her feet and grabs a handgun from her pants.
“Fucking hell, I’m not going to fucking kill you,” Ellie mutters, observing how Abby hesitates whether to raise the gun or not. “I just saved you,” she adds.
“You didn’t know you were saving me .” The voice takes her back to Seattle. No. No. She can’t think about that. It’s in the past. It already happened.
“I knew.”

"You're that girl from Jackson," the girl's bleary lips move, forming words that take Ellie a second to process. The name of Ellie's hometown back in Wyoming rings alarms in her head. How the fuck would anyone know that? She squints her eyes further, desperately trying to see who is chained up to the wall opposite from her. Is it one of Abby's friends? That's the only way someone would remember her.
When Ellie finally gets a good look at the girl's face, her heart pounds and her skin boils as white-hot rage floods through her body.
It's her.

Summary
From her spot on the sandy beach, Ellie can perfectly see the domed building at the edge of Catalina Island. It stands tall and proud with mountains in front and behind. It has white walls and distinct reddish rooftops, and flags surrounding the roof.
Maybe it's all in her head, but she thinks about how Avalon looks like a sanctuary. The scenery and architecture are so amazing that it looks straight out of a brochure. But that's exactly what makes her more skeptical.
She imagined the Fireflies to regroup in an abandoned, sketchy apartment — similar to Boston.
"Ellie." Her name echoes from Abby's chapped lips. Ellie cranes her head slightly, making eye-contact with the blonde girl. She hadn't realized how far Lev and Abby walked as she just stood here lost in thought.
"C'mon," Abby says, urging her to continue with a nod of her head. There's a knowing look on her face as she stares at her. One of understanding.
With one last longing glance in the distance, Ellie follows her and leaves their boat behind.
