“Caleb, I killed you.” Essek says, his voice breaking halfway through Caleb’s name, insistent tears finally forcing their way out.
“I know.” Caleb states dryly, leaning in. “I was there.”
“I killed you.” Essek repeats desperately. He feels like he is pleading for something, though he doesn’t know what.
“Hmm. And I survived.” Caleb whispers. His breath is hot on Essek’s skin. His eyes fixed solidly on Essek’s mouth.
“You were dead.” Essek sobs, losing all composure as a second hand comes up to cradle his face. Broad thumbs swiping at his cheeks. “I killed you.”
“Didn’t you listen?” Caleb breathes against his lips. “I forgive you.”
Essek wants to tell him he can’t, tell him he shouldn’t, but Caleb kisses him, chasing the plea out of his mouth.

Lucien leaned back in his chair at the comment and gave it a beat before he cocked his head towards Essek with a leering smile on his face. He folded his arms, keeping his eyes resting on Caleb while directing his next comment to his right.
“He’s attractive when he’s condescending.”
He was rewarded by an immediate stiffening of Essek next to him and a flush across Caleb’s face as he coughed and turned away. The tension up the back of Essek’s neck was clear, and his long ears twitched back slightly. Smiling more widely, Lucien turned to look at Essek, who resolutely didn’t meet his gaze.
“Feisty as well, isn’t he? Hungry for knowledge. Always about books and learning. He said as much himself. Is that how he wound you in?”

Lucien picks up on the unspoken tension between Essek and Caleb and uses it to his advantage. Set shortly after E122 Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained.

At least if the fake person on the other end tries to keep up the farce to scam him, he'll already be a step ahead. He wonders just how common this sort of thing is, and whether it works. Surely nobody is stupid enough to fall for a profile of a celebrity, right?
