Shadow was able to save Dr. Robotnik just in time. Dr. Robotnik, having faced death, has had a massive revelation. He’s been in a romantic relationship with his Agent for years and only now realized. How embarrassing, he can’t let Agent Stone know that he’d been so clueless. So, he doesn’t mention it and treats Agent Stone with a newfound appreciation that only comes from life-altering knowledge gained after almost dying.

Agent Stone has been head over heels for Dr. Robotnik since his first year of working with him. After Dr. Robotnik miraculously returns from his latest near-death experience, he is a lot more affectionate with Agent Stone. He may not know why the Doctor is acting this way, but he’s not complaining. Agent Stone resolutely enjoys this newfound positive attention with content silence. Not willing to risk their newfound synergy by talking about it and having the Doctor retreat to his depression.

“But?” he prompts.
“But he isn’t really gone,” Stone says determinedly, “nor is Maria. It’s terrible that we will never see them again, but the memories are not going to disappear. And Maria will never disappear, Shadow, so long as you hold those memories of her deep within you until they’re so much a part of you that they grow with you. That’s what I’ll do for- for Ivo.”
“Yes,” Shadow says. “The blue hedgehog said much the same.” He looks up shakily. “A light shines even though the star is gone.”
“I like that,” Stone murmurs.

Shadow wakes up after the destruction of the Eclipse Cannon and discovers he's been rescued and taken in by Agent Stone. They talk about the people they've lost, and how Shadow blames himself for not running away with Maria when she wanted to.

It takes a few seconds for Sonic to realize what he’s talking about. “Oh you mean that night- well dude, I couldn’t just leave you all by yourself! You seemed so- so-“
”So what?” Shadow demands.
Sonic flicks through the various things he could finish that sentence with, dismayed to find that most of them are mildly insulting. He settles on, “Alone. You seemed so alone. And I didn’t want you to be.”
They stand there for a long minute. Rain drips down Shadow’s face, turns him into one soaked gleaming part of the night. At last he nods. Sonic fights off the sense that he just passed some kind of test.

The three years since Sonic ran away have been long and exhausting, and there’s no end in sight, but there’s plenty of pretty views along the way and fascinating people to meet, and he’s loathe to complain when there’s folks who have it a whole lot worse. And yeah maybe it's not smart, making it his personal mission to figure this stranger out, but the guy stole his popsicle. Can you blame him?
