Here's the thing about masks.
I'm in Manhattan for a minor exorcism and everyone's wearing them. Skinny white women in hundred-dollar pants jog down streets that the poor, desperate souls of the past used as gateways to slow, drug-assisted suicides. Tourists clog the alleyways, loitering two and three across, pointing at sites where they don't seem to see the ghosts pointing back. I do. The New York of the past is as far away as a bad dream. Which is to say, not far enough.
I adjust my own mask, a simple black number, and wonder if I should've worn a face covering with more flair. Maybe I'm too old for it. Imagine John Constantine, self-conscious about a piece of fabric on his face. Well, the years ain't been easy and hiding ain't my style.
