Alex remembers the way his primary school teachers used to talk to Ian - their words deliberate and soft, the way they would indicate and motion with their eyes. The way she would say oh he’s doing so well and wave towards the english and science corner of the classroom, he’s made so many friends and her eyes would linger pointedly towards Tom and his parents.
It was the adults’ way of transferring intelligence. Trying, for all intents and purposes, to make sure the children didn’t understand the underlying conversation. Like the children watching wouldn’t notice the intense staring and gesturing.
