Summary
Meeting with, becoming part of Avalanche was nothing more than revenge for Tifa at first. Sephiroth had robbed her of her father and her home. She wanted to retort in kind, inflict pain on the man who carved a further indignity into her chest with his sword. But there was more at work than simply Sephiroth. The company who declared him as the first SOLDIER, who deployed the Mako reactor onto the slopes of Mount Nibel. The device’s unquenchable thirst would consume the delicate Mako fountain given enough time. Sephiroth might be no more but those who gave rise to him, who championed him, who sent him – of all people – to fix a fault with the reactor remained.
Avalanche have a plan to prevent Shinra's damage to the Planet. But is it the only choice?

Summary
The train shifted away from Tifa, upsetting Aeris’s balance ahead. She grabbed for the train beside her; she let go looking panicked as the train slid away from her and fell back. Another crane wobbled from the impact and slowly toppled. Some other distant crash sounded and the crane jolted forward. Right towards them. No time to think; Tifa grabbed Cloud’s waist and with a pivot moved him out of danger, the pointed end of the crane punching a deep groove into the concrete.
Tifa, Cloud and Aeris need a route back through the Train Graveyard.

Cloud yelped in pain. The SOLDIER grinned. The pain in his ear too distracting, hardly aware the SOLDIER was tightening his grip on his shirt, drawing him into the air. One hand still clutching his shirt, the other moving with predatory slowness towards his face. Little chance the SOLDIER could not easily kill him. A vain hope it would at least be quick.
Cloud hunts down rogue SOLDIERs, but is saved by one in particular.

Tifa’s dreams were always of the fire. Sleep best avoided, but it kept them at bay. She did not want to sleep, but could not avoid it. Too much risk. From the point she awoke in the coffin to the point she forced her body back into slumber, she had about an hour before an outbreak. Before something else took over. The metallic coating of her missing hand clenched, metal clicking against metal. Time to explore. Time for a distraction.
Another of Hojo's experiments; Tifa awakens periodically, snatching the moments she can before the monsters possessing her take over.

The changes of the season made little different to Tifa’s choice of wardrobe. Nibelheim was cool all year, sometimes raising to warm in the hottest summers, but otherwise experienced a distinct risk of hypothermia during the night-time for the unwary. Even getting past the climate, Tifa did not have the luxury of others in town who could afford to wear short-sleeves and thin garments. Providing and tracking safe routes across the twisted mountain peak required her ever prepared for changes in the weather.

When I put this to Lockhart all she can do is shrug and laugh at those who still insist there must be some subterfuge or that Lockhart herself is a distraction from the true talent.

His knees finally buckled in Sector 8, where his back fell against the elevated train station platform. Something cold dripped onto his head but he didn’t have much thought to spare for that. Instead, his hand tightened around the handle of a massive broadsword sitting in his lap. It was at least five feet long, grubby from what he knew was years of use. It had been years of use, because it was his sword, and he’d had it for as long as he could remember. SOLDIER 1st Class, that’s what he was. But it was all a bit hazy wasn’t it? Warped in the wrong places, too many people or not enough? One him? Many hims? It was all a bit green, now that he thought about it.

Tifa stopped worrying about physical harm coming to Cloud pretty early on in their relationship. Their true relationship, not the vague mutual acquaintanceship they shared as children when he knew who she was, when she was only faintly aware of him: someone else who lived in Nibelheim. Not someone she classified as one of her friends.
Tifa contemplates Cloud's hardiness.

Summary
Long-term survival in Midgar depended on a few specific factors of which location was probably the single most important. Always safer on the Upper Plate; best place for anyone wanting a shot at a longer life. The slums varied wildly in terms of personal security. Sector Seven felt safe enough; at least Tifa never felt the need to look over her shoulder there. Unlike, say, Sector Six. Sector Five was reportedly also a pretty safe district, but that part of Midgar tended to inspire some odd rumors. Houses that moved and might be capable of eating people for one extreme example. Hard to give that any credence, but with a city of this scale and with official reports of monsters managing to enter the city in the night-time, and the strangeness of documented monster types in the area, near anything seemed possible.
Tifa worries the flower girl in the pink dress is way too innocent to be wandering into Sector Six.

The quiet guard pushed in front of her before she could blink, his rifle aimed at the creature but without anything close to enough time to aim- It was too close. The wolf slammed into the guard, sprawling him onto his back as it fell on top of him. Zack moved in a blur a second later; a gust of wind whipped her hat from her head as something dark bisected the wolf; the creature collapsed and lay still. A flick of the enormous blade- Tifa glanced at the guard and stopped. Cloud Strife lay on the ground, frantically tugging his helmet back into place before he made any move to push the corpse weighing him down away. Somehow he missed the points on his chest where the wolf’s claws had drawn blood. "Hey SOLDIER?" Tifa called. "You want to keep going or should we get this guy some help?"
Cloud did not really want to return to his home with Zack but a chance moment when climbing Mount Nibel with Tifa changes everything.

The soft glow of the candles was tremendously relaxing. She had locked the door, the lights were off, the water was wonderfully hot, and - most importantly - there was a naked man lying right behind her. Tifa sighed in contentment as she leant back against Xehanort, his arms curling around her waist. "Finally," she said.
Tifa and Xehanort want a relaxing time in the bath, but did not figure on Tifa's roommates.

Tifa stared at Cloud, trying to make sense of the doctor’s comments and the implications of his words a second before. The other members of Avalanche were gone, left to do something, anything. Now she wished she had not let them go, wished she knew where her PHS was. She needed to talk to someone.
"I'm sorry," she said, interrupting the doctor and leaning forward in her chair. still staring at Cloud's face. "Could you say that... again?"
"Hmmm?" He sounded distracted, unaware of the confusion in her voice. "I was asking if you knew if she had any history of mental illness or substance abuse."
Tifa stays behind with Cloud in Mideel and is told something unexpected.

Before Yuffie can raise an eyebrow and comment, Tifa leans close to her, the smile dissolving into a grim expression.
"You found that ring in his house didn't you?"
"No," Yuffie says, her voice low, her eyes staring off in the direction Cloud left. "I didn't get it there."
"This," Tifa gestures. "Is his mother's ring, and you took it. Now you're going to put it back where you found it."
"Are you absolutely certain it's his mom's?" Yuffie does not appear guilty so much as worried now.
"Yes," Tifa says with some force. "No one else would dream of doing something that elaborate. Cloud might have convinced himself someone else made a similar ring, but that one is definitely his mother's. Now you need to go back to Nibelheim and put it back where you found it."
"But that's not where I got it."
"Then where did you find it?" Tifa says with a touch more aggression then she wanted.
"The North Crater," the ninja says in a quiet voice.
There is something familiar about the ring on Yuffie's finger.
