Of course, Rusty had tried to venture out into the woods before. But he’d only ever made it as far as the fence before doubts, fears, uncertainty pushed him away. What if something happened to him while he was out there? What if something attacked him? He'd seen foxes pass by, watched huge birds circle overhead. He'd heard stories of snakes eating young cats like himself whole if they strayed too far.
The leaves on the trees outside fluttered, as if a massive gust of wind shook them. The gust blew open the latch on his little door to the backyard. It flapped violently in the wind, before falling back down. Rusty blinked down at it, and then glanced back out to the forest with pinned ears.

But Tawnyspots dies 1 month before she gives birth. Filled with bitterness towards an obligation, one never to be fulfilled, she turned her back on her son.
That was how it always went. Willowpelt neglected Darkkit. Darkkit grew up alone and angry. But somehow, this time, something changed. The death of Swiftbreeze had brought her kits together. Darkkit couldn’t survive here.
