But if there was one thing he wasn't, it was a defeatist. He may have lost everything, but his ambition could not be tempered. He will achieve the impossible, he will defeat Death.
Its not a question of how or even if it can be done. Dankovsky must accomplish this task. For should he fail and Death be proclaimed the victor, there is no telling what prize it might dare to claim.

Unclothed and perched on Daniil’s old university bed in the perfect picture of repose, Artemy Burakh lifts a cigarette to his lips, and inhales.
The end doesn’t glow cherry-coal the way it’s supposed to. It glows viridian and lush, and upon the exhale; the cigarette begins to grow upwards. It unfurls, stretches. Scarlet stalk, Green tobacco leaves, pink flowers sprouting anew.

At the porch, though, in the narrow corridor, he finds himself disoriented. The air is objectively cold, house unheated yet, but compared to the snow outside, it feels warm and welcoming. And the music. He can hardly fathom burglars to play music.
Haltingly, Artemy shuffles into his own house.
He hazards a glance upstairs, but the music is oozing out of the living room.
And sure enough, there it is: his mother’s old phonograph. Years since used, drawn now from its dusty corner to the centre. The sound cracks, rusty round the edges, even if the song sounds ambiguously modern. Something wistful.
For a moment he stands, baffled, snow on his shoulders and boots, stuck in place on the threshold. Had Dankovsky received his own guests? But whom?
He takes a step inside, looks down, and jolts.
Hardly visible from the door, there he is. Dankovsky.
Curled awkwardly on the couch with one one of the threadbare woollen blankets drawn over him, one gloveless hand hanging limply to the floor, palm open. The cuff of his sleeve is undone. Head bent at an odd angle, mouth parted, he’s asleep.
With a second’s lag, Artemy registers the cat, sleeping curled against the crook of his bent legs; and the open book dropped to the floor. A bottle of wine and a single glass stand neatly on the coffee table.
He doesn’t know what to do.
There’s something unnervingly intimate about the picture, something searingly lonely. Like he’d walked into Dankovsky’s own house, the privacy of his life, and caught him unguarded and vulnerable.

Sleepless, he says offhandedly. But he barely touches Artemy, and Artemy hardly dares touch him, for fear—which he hardly voices to himself, at first—of being pushed away.
Or: Artemy thinks Daniil is leaving; and tries to make peace with it.
