Gintoki hadn't lasted the night.
Hijikata had stayed with the small group until the early hours of the morning where they received the news huddled in the corridor outside his emergency room. There had been a lot of shouting, of crying and even some doors were broken as a grief-stricken Kagura fought to go see him. She didn't believe it. Otose was stunned into silence and even though she tried not to show it on her face, holding the kids close to her, when their faces were hidden in her chest Hijikata saw her pain. It was stark and maternal, her white face and … she looked as though she had lost her son. Hijikata couldn't stay for much longer. He bowed deeply in front of the emergency room, he felt he had to even though he didn't know why, then swiftly left.
When Kondou turned up later, he met his eyes with an empathetic grimace because it must have been written all over his face. Sougo looked at him and the slow realisation was painful to watch. His lips parted and he whispered something. He ran through the ward and Hijikata didn't- couldn't follow. Kondou stayed by his side and he hadn't realised how much he needed someone here right now until a hand smoothed the small of his back comfortingly and a small hiss broke through his gritted teeth.
It was a hard night to swallow, but the following few weeks were the worst.

A year has passed since the battles of the Final Arc. Everything has returned to normal... at least by Gintama standards.
A Shipping Tournament is underway, where the characters must get into pairs and compete for popularity. A squad of Amanto policemen have arrived on Earth to "cooperate" with the Shinsengumi in eliminating the Joui rebels. And if that isn't enough, a villain from Sougo's past threatens to wipe out the entire city.
Gintama* (pronounced Gintama Pointer) makes reference to Gintama as a satirical fanfiction about a satirical anime. From the squabbling romance between Kagura and Sougo, to the tragedy of Hijikata's true love, Shinpachi's questionable attempts at seducing you the Reader, this is a tale of laughter and tears, starring the characters we all know and love.

“I figured he was on our side since you let him past so easily.” Hijikata spluttered on his mayonnaise and pointed an accusing chopstick at the brat. Before they could launch into their usual bout of insults, Kondo Isao lowered his tray onto the table beside Sougo, opposite Hijikata and threw the company a wide beam.
