For a second, Volley is certain she’s misheard him. The first words she’s ever heard out of Optimus Prime’s own mouth can’t possibly be a pick-up line. She’s having a fever dream of some sort, maybe. Probably.
But then she looks at Megatron, and knows she didn’t mishear at all. He’s speechless and blushing, opening his mouth only to snap it closed, faceplates heating so abruptly that the air around him shimmers. And why wouldn’t he be?
After all, Optimus Prime just hit on him.

Megatron, once the bane of Optimus Prime’s existence, extended his hand in truce—a gesture that was met with equal reluctance and resolve.

D’s face scrunched up in skepticism. Orion stared pleadingly into his optics. He had hoped D could feel the same fatigue from their monotony as he had. It might’ve been their song and dance to wake up and escape in the middle of the night, but it was the spontaneity that Orion craved. He needed D to assist in getting him out of this rut, even if it were just for a single night. As the pause in the flickering light edged further on, the distant spinning of fans and the sound of exhalation from smoke pipes filled the quiet night.
D-16’s lips pursed as he sighed in defeat, “Fine. You win.”
Orion’s face beamed.

Except, he can still see Orion Pax in there, with his righteous demeanor and those blue optics as familiar to him as his own. They’re full of sorrow, his mouth a twist of pain.
And somehow that’s what makes him turn away, resetting his vocalizer. “It’s too late for that.”
He’s hollow. He’s so full of this awful, septic anger and he has nowhere to put it.
“No, it’s not-” Pax reaches out a servo, almost hesitant. He looks like he’s actually listening for once, and there’s a touch of desperation there. Hope. D-16 huffs a small, brittle laugh. Pax always could hope.

Optimus found his former friend, looking as he did when they were miners, cog ripped from his chassis and empty once more.
As Optimus hides Megatron away while he heals, they both struggle to face the limits of strength, the burdens of leadership, their roles in the new age of Cybertron, a shared past that still draws them towards one another, the circumstances that forced them apart - and a somewhat inconvenient difference in size.
