Light flares up from the book, white and blinding. When she blinks away the spots from her vision the room is gone. The book is gone.
Dim green light casts a sickly pall down a long, decrepit looking hallway. She takes a breath and nearly chokes on the smell of dust and rot and something else, sharp and unnatural, like ozone. The light doesn’t seem to be coming from anywhere in particular. It gives the place an eerie unreality. It makes her skin crawl.

It feels strange. It’s already November. In just a few more weeks, Charles will have been dead a whole year.
“Charles,” says Edwin. “Is there a reason people are suddenly wearing flowers in their lapels? I’d noticed a few yesterday, but there are more today.”
“They’re poppies,” he says. “Remembrance Sunday’s coming up, innit.” He looks at Edwin, whose confusion hasn’t abated, and remembers belatedly that Edwin had died before the end of World War One. “It’s a sort of memorial,” he says. “For people who’ve died in wars."

And yes, for a split second, he experiences that rush of endorphins that comes from firing a gun, and satisfaction flows through his veins. However, most of his job is spent like this: waiting, patiently anticipating the perfect moment to strike. If done correctly, no one sees where his shot came from, and no one knows who it was. He is a ghost killer, not seen or heard, but nevertheless feared.

That was, until he got himself confined to desk-duty and became so bored he'd take any opportunity to get out and back to real detective work. Any opportunity. He just didn't expect that particular opportunity to be going undercover at a beauty pageant.

Summary
Charles was 16 when he ran away from home and found himself in the kitchen at Café Vivienne. Caught in the act of stealing a roll of bread, he expected to be arrested. Instead he found a home, a purpose, a family.
Of course, none of that lasted. Aunt Vivi—his beloved mentor—died six months ago, and now Charles’s livelihood is under threat when her estranged great nephew—and his former best friend—Edwin, returns to claim his inheritance.
It won’t be a happy reunion.
Crystal snorted. “What did the Lawyer from Hell want? Don’t tell me that prick’s causing problems again? What’s his name? Edward?”
“Edwin,” Charles corrected, the name rolling off his tongue automatically.
Crystal looked at him sharply, her gaze lingering. Charles kept his eyes fixed on the edge of the table. He could imagine what she was thinking, though she could only know the tiniest details. She didn’t know the full story. Even Aunt Vivi hadn’t known that.
“He’s coming here,” he said. “Apparently Aunt Vivi wanted him to stay here for a bit. So, he’s arriving today, though no one’s said anything about how long for, or what he’s planning on doing with the place. Guess I’ll have to ask him that myself when he shows up.”
