Summary
Carter’s parents have always teased him about his tendency to take in strays. It started when he was three years old and brought a rabbit with a broken leg from their yard to his room, claiming that since it was hurt, it needed his bed more than he did. The animals changed over the years, ranging from birds with damaged wings to a three legged puppy from the shelter he volunteered at in high school, but the feeling of needing to protect something so lost and vulnerable never went away.
He felt the same looking at Scott’s boyfriend alone on the ice.
_____After a historic cup win, none of the Admirals know quite what comes next. They do know two things:
1. They’ve all got their captain’s (and by extension his boyfriend’s) back.
2. It’s time to party. -

Summary
is he being mugged right now?
He hears the guy yelling something at him, but in his panicked state, he can’t understand the words he’s saying.
He must not react fast enough for the other man, because his head is slammed back against the brick, and Dennis definitely can’t understand him now— not over the ringing in his ears.
He feels his backpack being pulled away from him, and he thrashes, kicking at the other man— connecting violently with his knee.
”YOU BITCH!”
Well, he understands that, at least.

Summary
The New York night air was cool, charged with the city's peculiar energy. They walked in silence for a few blocks, the sound of their footsteps and breathing mixing with the distant traffic noise. Until Scott stopped under a streetlamp's light, pulled Kip close and kissed him again, unhurried, without an audience.
"Home? So you can fuck me." Scott asked, his mouth still close to Kip's.
"Home so I can fuck you." Kip confirmed.

Summary
As far as he’d seen, Scott had never fought over it during a game. Hockey players were, to Kip’s understanding, Neanderthals who were prone to dropping their gloves at the slightest provocation. Scott hardly ever fought anyone, and the bruises he’d borne after those ugly games had been defensive. Instead of fighting, Scott skated harder, played better, scored goal after goal until there could be no doubt as to his skill, his strength, despite…well, despite the other thing.

“Welcome back to Man in the Crease, your one stop hockey shop. We’re continuing our off season deep dive on all of the league’s captains, and Admirals fans, today is your day. For a man who brought the cup home to New York last season, Scott Hunter’s performance this year was-“ the host was interrupted by a record scratch.
Scott found that rather odd considering this was a digital medium.
The static ended and a new - and very familiar - voice started up again. “We interrupt your regular listening to bring you a taste of the MLH’s latest commentary podcast. Welcome to Man Out of the Crease. We’re still working on the title, but I’m your host Kip Grady. For our premiere episode, we’ll be discussing why New York Admirals captain Scott Hunter needs to learn to give himself grace and stop listening to every bad thing that shitty analysts have to say about him.”
_____Kip is tired of Scott being so hard on himself and listening to negative sports commentary, so he makes his own sports podcast featuring absurd statistics, thirst tweets, and general shenanigans.

Scott will be playing, any time, and he feels good. He feels fresh, even. He’s not creaky at all. And, yet, he’ll look at some of his teammates, with their baby faces, and their acne riddled foreheads, and that makes him feel about thirty with three zeroes behind it.

One night, Scott spots a grey hair on his head. When he spirals, Kip is there to bring him back down to earth.

Summary
It was 3:00 AM. Kip was exhausted, his body hummed with a pleasant, bone-deep ache from the last few hours, and he was absolutely starving.
He padded over to the refrigerator, a stainless steel monolith that looked complicated enough to launch a shuttle into orbit. He tugged it open.
"Jesus, Hunter," Kip muttered, bathed in the sterile LED glow.
It was a nutritional wasteland. Rows of bottled water (fancy brand). A carton of egg whites. Spinach. Unsweetened almond milk. A lonely container of blueberries sitting next to a bunch of perfectly yellow bananas. This fridge was designed for peak athletic performance, not for a human being who had just burned a significant amount of calories in bed.

5 times Kip took ownership of Scott’s kitchen + 1 time it belonged to both of them. -

Summary
It’s Christmas Eve, and Dennis is in the foulest mood anyone could ever be in.
Only internally though. Outwardly, he’s acting completely normally because it isn’t anyone else’s fault that he’ll be spending the next day all alone.
He’s writing up his notes, silently praying for someone to come in with an emergency that takes up so much time that he naturally continues his shift into the next day. It’s probably not good to pray on a tragedy, but Dennis is far past the point of sterling morality this week.
He imagines it will come back to bite him.

“Are you an, uh, Admirals fan?” He asked, trying to nod to the man’s sweatshirt and likely miserably failing.
“I am an Admirals fan,” the stranger said, turning back to Scott. “In fact, you could probably say I’m Scott Hunter’s biggest fan.”
A pit of jealousy began to rise in Scott’s stomach, until he realized that he was Scott Hunter.

Summary
It’s Kip. Real-life Kip, not the dream version Scott has been silently arguing with in his head for the last six weeks. Real Kip with his denim jacket that is not warm enough for New York, and a knit hat that is doing nothing to tame his wild curls. Real Kip, who is looking at Scott with a far too sad smile.
“Hi,” He says from where he’s still standing in the doorway, stuck there with one foot in Scott’s life, and the rest of his body out of it. He looks awkward and windswept and more beautiful than he’s ever been before.
Everything Scott has ever wanted.
Everything Scott can never have.
