Kaveh has enough troubles on his plate even without dealing with his confusing relationship with and unfortunately lingering feelings for his stubborn, infuriating roommate. But when a strange conspiracy begins closing in on Al-Haitham and threatening the precarious balance of their daily lives, Kaveh finds himself having to reevaluate the nature of their relationship and reckon with the ghosts of the past.

There’s never really a good time, way, or reason to tell Kaveh about his long-lived, amoral, exiled, criminal ex-partner — who, Al-Haitham will note, was not any of those things at the time they were involved.
However, there is definitely a worst way for Kaveh to find out.

Haitham’s uncharacteristic erraticness was having, oddly enough, the opposite effect on Kaveh. It was easier to find stable ground inside himself when the waves were choppy outside. Or maybe it was the bone-deep exhaustion of knowing that if he responded in kind, there wouldn’t even be ashes left to sift through.

It can motivate a topside scientist to brave the gray, and it can bully out years of ingrained wariness to make room for itself.
The man moves again, the necessary three steps left to reach a workbench of works-in-progress. The metalwork of it is rough, all hinges and mechanisms wrought from steel scrap. The beginning of a knee joint, sitting next to the first prototype of Jayce’s own leg brace.
The man’s gaze lingers there, intent and molten in the dimming afternoon light. Then he’s reaching out, reaching forward, his careful fingers tracing along welding seams and scratches in the metal, and Jayce’s curiosity flash-boils.

The drugs wear off. Which is good, because Jayce was ready to crawl his way back to Zaun just to punch Viktor in the throat. Upon reflection, that was likely an overreaction. More importantly, it was undignified. Jayce still has to wait for himself to heal.
