Summary
Sumeru had been quiet since Azar and the other sages were ripped from power. Cyno knew, however, that peace was only a facade, a temporary and fragile state of being that could crumble at the slightest disturbance. No, Cyno knew all too well that underneath the mask of peace, was a monster ready to bare its fangs.
While on a routine patrol in the desert, the matra are attacked by a group of mercenaries, earning the attention of the General Mahamatra. With new biological tactics being utilized by the enemy, Cyno seeks out the one person he trusts the most—Tighnari.
Unfortunately, Cyno becoming involved in the investigation only ends up making things worse, for him and possibly even the state of Sumeru.

“Okay. What can I do to assist?” Tighnari really didn’t see what the big deal was. Did Cyno need some kind of first aid prepared in case the investigation got dangerous? Perhaps a powder that would make the suspect more inclined to speak the truth in interrogation? A poison strong enough to take out a sumpter beast? Tighnari could certainly do that.
“I need a date.”Oh.
“A… what?” Tighnari asked in case he’d heard wrong.

Tighnari sighed, a gentle thing. “Look. My bow is over in that corner,” he gestured to the far right corner of the tent, where his bow indeed laid atop his day clothes. It was lucky enough to have that sort of cushion, as Cyno’s day clothes consisted of his helmet and a sprawl of assorted bands and elastane. “If you really insist, your polearm can ‘sleep’ next to it. Maybe that’ll make it a little less cold.”
“Really?” Cyno looked at the other man like he’d returned home with news of a promotion, or that he’d won a limited edition TCG card.
Tighnari’s gaze softened, and he massaged at one of his temples as he tilted his head to the side. “Yes,” he said, a laugh heavy in his voice.
Cyno scrambled up from where he sat—careful to step over Tighnari, fluffy tail and all (that took a wild amount of surface area)—and placed his staff ever-so carefully beside the Hunter’s Path.
“Here, the valiant warriors shall lie to rest, in preparation for their nigh skirmish.” Cyno declared, brushing off his hands and admiring his dutiful work.

“Does it? I was just trying to comfort you. Am I really that good?” Cyno wondered. Before Tighnari replied, he let out a short noise; too brief for Cyno to understand, but long enough for him to register. Then, the fox cleared his throat.
“Of course, love. You’re always so good for me,” Tighnari praised, their hug tightening. He murmured into Cyno’s ear, “Ahh, that’s it.”

The question startles Collei out of her excitement. She looks up at him with wide eyes, surprised, a spoonful of Padisarah pudding halfway to her mouth.
“You’re not just saying that because Tighnari suggested it, right?” he questions.
Collei lowers the spoon and shakes her head vehemently. “No, of course not!” she exclaims. “I — I like my homeschooling with Tighnari, and he’s always very patient and kind when he teaches me, but it’s… well… I just…” She glances down towards the table, fidgeting with her hands. “I think it’d be nice. To go to school. I never really got to do that before — before everything.”
‘Everything’ is a word far too small to encompass all of Collei’s everything, Cyno thinks.
