Summary
Connor didn’t quite know what he was thinking about. He just knew that his thoughts kept happening. Thinking about a topic with some clarity, and then that topic… faded. A heavy kind of silence in his head that he couldn’t help but get lost in. Unmoving and quiet.
It felt as though a thick blanket of snow had settled on top of him, and Gavin was above that snow. Now and then sound or thoughts would filter through more clearly, just for a few moments, before the quiet swallowed him up once more.

MIA meant uncertainty. Meant hope that festered like an infected wound. Meant looking at that empty chair across the breakfast table every morning and wondering if Johnny was alive somewhere, hurting, calling for help that would never come. Or worse—already dead in some unmarked grave, his body left to rot in foreign soil while Simon waited for news that would never arrive.

It was that way for months after. Working opposite shifts and never trying to recreate that one night that stayed in their minds. Then human-android couples were found dead. Connor and Gavin fit the profile for an undercover operation.
Being coworkers with benefits did not seem like a bad idea. After all, it was just for the case. It would not mean anything. Might as well have fun while undercover. Right?

At least he’s still breathing, Soap thinks grimly before he shakes his head, shoves everything down to the back of his mind to be dealt with later — his fear, his exhaustion, the ache in his bones, all of it is neatly compartmentalised until there’s only the safehouse.
