“We should do this again.” Clint continues. “You’re a good smoking buddy.”
"Let's do it." Bucky blurts.
"Fuck yeah, man. How's Tuesday?"
"Time travel. Let's do time travel."
Bucky understands exactly why Steve chose to smoke with Clint. Instead of the man doing the proper thing and saying no, he looks over at Bucky and raises an eyebrow. “Like, right now?”

OR: Bucky gets high with Clint Barton and goes back in time to convince Steve not to spend the rest of his immortal life with Peggy. Steve, consumed by righteous rage and yearning, is not, in fact, spending the rest of his immortal life with Peggy.Bookmarked by Drawitori

Peggy takes a deliberate sip of her tea. Bucky tenses, like he’s a child again waiting for the impact of his father’s hand. It doesn’t come. “Steve fucking Rogers – the very man who disobeyed direct orders and ran behind enemy lines to maybe save you, the same man who you just said became an international criminal to save you – gets access to time travel and you think he comes back to win me over?”

Steve is a regular, perfectly reasonable guy. He is not a troublemaker, despite what his friends say. The things that happen to him could happen to literally anyone. I mean, who hasn’t accidentally become a stalker and then caused an international spy agency to implode?

Smol Steve the shit-stirring ethical spy stalker!
Only a chapter in and it’s my new favourite. (As always)he kind of figured the apocalypse-revolution would have occurred and money would no longer exist by now.
... the year’s not over yet...That’s the problem with getting coffee before you’ve had coffee. It’s a classic causality dilemma. Difficult to gain one without the other already present.
Dropping the big truthbombs here.
“I think you underestimate the amount of time you spend frowning.”
Steve frowns.
“Um, hey, this is embarrassing, and I know it’s not your job to monitor the bathroom just because you have the closest office to it, but do you know whose job it is to monitor the bathroom? Cause it definitely needs, uh, monitoring?”
James B. Barnes is yet another stupidly handsome super spy who forgets how to talk when they aren’t in Charm and Disarm Mission Mode. Steve’s worked at Shield long enough to know that agents are so attractive it’s stressful for normal people to look at them, and that agents are often incredibly bad at small talk with civilians.

Summary
Bucky Barnes doesn’t need help from anybody. He has things under control. He definitely doesn't need help from the skinny blonde guy in Apartment 5A who keeps looking at Bucky like he thinks Bucky needs help.
Things are fine. Mostly fine. Well. They are probably on the trajectory towards fine.
Warnings: references to domestic violence, though it is in the past and not depicted on screen, it’s referenced. Also, feelings about being in the closet. Some light suicidal ideation, you know, for the sparkle. May contain: first fumblings towards love. They are just babies, really (though to be clear: they are not actually infants).

Bucky POV.
Smol Steve.
Modern setting.
Bucky 20. Steve around same. Bucky dropped out of uni after 2 years to rescue family. Lost scholarship doing so.
Bucky has 2 sisters - Becca (11) & Hannah (8), & Mum. Just left ex-step-dad Frank from New Jersey.
Sarah is alive. Sarah & Winnie work together as nurses.
Bucky works as a security guard at the same hospital. Steve studies art at community college. The one where Bucky with the sad eyes is trying to survive & hold his family together before he can even think about clawing his life back. And Steve is there, being his usual prickly, stubborn, determined, thoughtful, artistic, occasionally law-breaking but only for a good cause to help the downtrodden & stick it to the arseholes kind of way SJW.
No big superhero-style disasters, or even big regular life disasters (in-story, anyway), just recovering from regular life disasters. So it’s all recovery - that slow recovery that you don’t even realise is happening because you’re too busy just trying to keep surviving and you don’t really believe that recovery is even a thing you could have anymore so you don’t even notice that you have space for that now so it kinda started without your permission and it feels worse instead of better while it’s happening so you think it’s just more of life being genaerally shit. But it’s still happening. (Neither of the boys has to rescue each other.)
The one with Steve's art metaphors about drawing the fire hydrant & about oil painting layers vs ala Prima, and Bucky’s physics & engineering analogies.
And with the section break graphics that slowly evolve/recover over the course of the story.Little guys having big feelings. About life & about each other.
My initial bookmark had lots of quotes of my favourite parts, but I want other people to read this story & don’t want to spoil it for them. (Wouldn’t it be great to be able to have a public & a private bookmark for the same piece?)
But big chunks of the fire hydrant scene were here, and most, if not all, of Steve’s art might-be-metaphors (what can I say, I’m an artist, so they struck bone for me).
And when Bucky left something on the front stoop.
And several pieces about the pain of distance between a mother and a becoming-adult kid, especially when life is shit and they accidentally make it worse for each other without realising because they’re both desperately hanging on by their fingernails. (For no reason at all. Nope, nothing to see here. Ouch! If we had a dishwasher...)What a shame I don’t have those fave bits here anymore for a quick highlights reel speedrun, I guess I’ll just have to read the entire thing again to find them. Oh no! And then a bunch of her other stuff too. Oops!
It’s Zenaida so you know it’s good. & well written. & funny. & heart wrenching. & weirdly educational about Steve &/or Bucky’s job/specialty/interests. & great banter. & kid side-characters that are both obnoxiously real and yet also fun. & the personality of the POV character revealed through the way they think. All that delicious, chewy goodness she delivers every time.
Just read it. Read them all. -

Unique take on the “soulmate’s name on your arm”, with it being how they self-identify, rather than their actual name (although it can be that too, if that’s how they think of themselves). So the names change as their self-identity changes. And its both less specific about who your soulmate actually is (in legal documentation) and also MORE specific because it tells you about THEM, not just something their parents named them.
And, as repeatedly reminded by Nana, Love is a choice - soulmates doesn’t mean you MUST end up together, just that you COULD, & that if you do then it could be really good. Also nowhere says that it’s a romantic soulmate, can be read as platonic & if you want more then that’s up to the 2 (or 3?) of you. But this one def has hope for eventual OT3 after the story ends.Would be great to see this type of soulmate name-on-arm turn up in other fics & fandoms & become A Thing.

Another 2nd person Bucky POV recovering winter soldier fic that I’m finding a decade late.
And the 2nd person works really well here too. Especially when it changes from descriptions to quotes, and back again.
Beautifully written, great characters & voice. Lovely insights, eloquently written. And also hilariously funny.Snippet speedrun:
The arm is yours. They gave it to you. It's yours. It's the only thing that is. The Americans, they misunderstood. They saw the arm and thought: that is the whole person. That person is a weapon. But the Russians said: this is a person with a tool. Here. This is your weapon. This is how it works.
It's yours, and you don't want to do this, but you have to.
...
You wonder if Captain America is small in his dreams.
...
You try to imagine yourself as a small child. Doing your best to keep Steve from getting hurt, even in his sleep. You can't do it. You just see yourself now, but smaller. A tiny you, beard and all. Maybe Steve would hold onto your empty sleeve and pull you along. So you wouldn't get lost. So he wouldn't lose you.
...
“Dreams are like that,” says Steve. “Even when they're things that actually happened. I read that it's your brain cleaning house when you're asleep. Trying to sort things and – make connections between them, I guess. Whatever brains do with all the information we put in them. Sam could probably tell us.”
You think of a little maid in your head. Tidying up in the dark. Putting reels on a projector, all out of order.
You feel bad for her. She has a hundred years of junk to wade through.
...
“Like songs?” Steve suggests. “You can't recite all the words, but you know what line is coming next if you're singing it.”
...
“What happens if I never remember. You. Me. Everything from before.”
“Whoever you end up being – I'd like a chance to get to know you. Better. Or all over again. I'd like to you to be happy. And I'd like to be there when it happens.”
...
Sam says goodbye in the afternoon. He claps you on your right shoulder and tells you to stay out of trouble. He tells you, but he looks at Steve when he says it.
Steve mutters where's the fun in that? when they hug goodbye. Sam sighs.
...
For a soldier, Steve sleeps like the dead. You think: special operative. Never saw the trenches. Had a team. Never learned to sleep with one eye open. Just a kid. You think: god. Just a kid.
You try not to think about what that makes you.

Bookmarker's Notes
Both Bucky & Steve POVs.
Canon divergent AU of CA:TWS where Bucky is a modern SHIELD (non-Hydra) agent.
Bucky’s slow creep of realising something is not right in SHIELD, ratcheting up the tension, is beautifully written, especially as we know he is right to be suspicious. It’s not paranoia if they really are out to get you.
Like the CA:TWS movie, the fights here are great. It’s clear what’s happening physically & emotionally, the combatants are all individual people with individual fighting styles that fit their personality rather than all just interchangeable plastic dummies.
Also chock full of quips & banter from the characters and witty phrasing from the author.Snippets (speedrun minus fights & action) - SPOILERS:
*
The day S.H.I.E.L.D. falls, Bucky is thinking about expired milk.
*
It’s probably nothing.
*
Bucky is reminded of the time a rat bit the dust in the crawlspace above his apartment back in Brooklyn. The smell lingered for months, though his landlord insisted nothing was wrong. He has the same sensation now. Like death is in the walls.
Even if no one else will admit it.
*
It’s probably nothing.
*
When great forces are shifting from foot to foot, the details are what begin slipping through the cracks. It’s just, to Bucky’s knowing, there isn’t anything major enough being moved to explain all these little losses.
*
Somewhere, a gun fires.
“The hell was that?” Bucky asks, though he well knows.
“Leave it be,” the agent grunts.
“It was probably nothing,” Best agrees. “I’m sure it’s being taken care of.”
“Those are two different things,” he points out, standing slowly.
*
From the corner of his eye, Bucky saw the captain’s head tilt down slightly, like he was concealing a smile, and got the sudden, clear-cut impression that Steve Rogers might just be trouble.
Goddamn it.
*
Steve is not having the greatest day.
First, the milk in the break room had gone sour, then the institution Peggy built from the ground up unmasked itself to be a bed of the exact sort of snakes he’d died to stop seventy years ago, and now he’s being insulted by a ghost.
*
Steve was a lonely kid.
He was a sickly kid, he was a scrappy kid, he was a stubborn kid—but beneath it all, he was lonely.
*
The light at the end of the tunnel is growing, and with it the chance that their strategy will consist solely of gun it and hope.
That’s always been what Steve was best at, anyways.
*
“Fury was run off the road. They’re saying he didn’t make it.”
The furrow in Steve’s brow deepens. “They’re saying that, or you’re saying that?”
She folds her arms: her first indication of any kind of discomfort with S.H.I.E.L.D. and all it stood for going up in smoke. “He’s gone to ground, or he’s gone. Either way—”
“We’re on our own,” Steve finishes grimly.
*
What has Bucky done but survive? It's Steve who keeps standing back up and swinging.
*
So Bucky’d made a habit of that, then. Wading into the thick of it with all the good intent of dragging a hell-raiser out by their ears only to start throwing punches himself.
*
“New York is kind of lost on me these days.”
“‘Cause it’s different, or ‘cause people treat you different?” Bucky leans in, conspiratorially. “Or, was it the killer space monsters on 8th Avenue that put you off?”
Instead of the pang of a New York lost, Steve feels recognition. Recognised.
*
She’s saved my ass from assassins, aliens, and awkward conversations. And I don’t know a single real thing about her.
*
“I’m in it to keep your head attached to your shoulders. Someone’s gotta.” He knocks the side of his fist into Steve’s chest lightly, and the momentary warmth is piercing.
“I’ve been doing an alright job of it so far,” Steve says, and Bucky wrinkles his brow in a way Steve somehow knows means are you kidding?
*
Steve feels laughter high in his chest, right around where the star would sit. -

Canon-divergent Avengers 1 movie, where Steve finds Bucky in a cryo chamber along with SHIELD’s tesseract weapons stashed on the original helicarrier.
Written BEFORE cap2 movie! Wtf!? Yet complied with later cap2 reveals! (Eg cryo, SHIELD being a lie, although that’s as far as it states) but also with other comic canon woken in (Natasha/alia ballerina, tesseract/cosmic cube being able to return his memories (implied. Hope it went better than in the comics))
Clueless Bucky blindly following Steve (despite not knowing who he or Steve even are) is quickly inserted into the events of avengers 1 without really changing the outcome. When Steve has found him, hit the rapid-defrost, opened the casket, & grabbed a collapsing, confused, shaking, freezing, burning, blind, amnesiac Bucky to rescue him:
“I thought you were dead,” says the voice. Broad hands rub his upper arms even though there is no sensation in the left. “I thought you were dead. I saw you fall.”
He frowns and it feels as though his face is melting-contorting-aching because the voice and the hands just caught him; he didn’t fall.OMG his first sensation is being caught, of not being let fall! 😭
Funniest line (but this is not a funny/silly fic. Just this one classic reply from Stark)
“You need to put him back,” says Fury.
“They’re always worth more in the original packaging.”(replies Tony) -

Bucky POV
Ch1: Bucky is out at a bar for birthday drinks with friends & flirts with hot, sad, lonely random Steve, not realising he is Captain America.
Ch2: mostly flashback to Bucky’s experience of the New York alien attack.
Ch3: several random &/or “random” encounters.
Ch4: back at the bar for a hilariously awkward convo that mostly go well, before a ghosting.
Ch5: the ambulance dies. The patient might. Steve jogs by. Hilarity and heroics all round. Cowgirl paramedic Bucky!
(It feels weird saying a chapter in which a random stranger teeters on the brink of death the entire time is funny, but that’s Zenaida - the life & death is not trivialised or minimalised or made fun of. It’s treated more seriously than pretty much any book, tv show or movie that involves someone having a heart attack & requiring an ambulance - both on the technical side and the emotional. Yet around that, the banter and Bucky’s thought processes and the way they are written is just so fun!)
Ch 6: awww. Speedrun of their first few dates. HEA.I tried to do the thing where I pull some favourite quotes as a highlights speedrun but there are so many that it was too big to save. And that was just from the first 2 chapters! So just read it again. It’s ZenaidaMacroura so you know you’re gonna love it.
To anyone else bookmark-surfing, do yourself a favour & just read this story. ZenaidaMacroura is an amazing author. Just read their everything. Interesting (and surprisingly & randomly educational) stories with great characterisation demonstrated hilariously effectively through absolutely outstanding writing that has me literally laughing out loud in delight, stopping to ogle clever phrasing (too much to fit in a bookmark), and crying from grief or from just high emotion. My very brief recap to jog my memory does not do it justice as so much of the enjoyment isn’t just the situations but the way they are written. Fantastic authorial character voice. Give it a go, you’re in for a treat.
Oh another reason ZenaidaMacoura’s fics are so delightful - they are nice, thoughtful, competent (in their field at least) people being nice, thoughtful & component (at least in their field) with each other. Not arseholes being mean to each other (which is disturbingly popular in mainstream media recently). Not passing the stupid stick as an excuse for a plot. Not chucking a tantie & having a sulk. Sure there might be misunderstandings, but they are genuine from the situation not from being a prick, and everyone is trying to do their best. Just at least one of them is often, at least when trying to talk to the other, adorably & hilariously awkward. And the whole gang is witty & supportive & fun. The characters are a delight to hang out with, even when things get sneakily deep & make you cry. And the comments often have extra info/background/analysis/fun too.

Bookmarker's Notes
Post CA:TWS. Fits with authors other series, even though not part of it?
Sam POV.Sam & Bucky sit at the kitchen table having coffee while perpetually-fashion-awkward Steve tries on outfits for approval from them both - Sam because he’s going as Sam’s guest to Sam’s sister’s wedding, and Bucky because he was always the smooth, dapper charmer of the two of them back in the day.
Feeling like a boyfriend outside a department store changing room, Sam nods in what he hopes is a vaguely approving fashion.
“Sure, man,” says Sam, trying to sound encouraging instead of disinterested as hell. “You look fine.”
(Bucky disagrees.)
Between Steve’s show&twirls, Sam & Bucky both drop some truth bombs on each other, each revealing things about their own relationships with Steve, and enlightening things about the other’s relationship with Steve.
There are a few landmines...
He’s still like a sniper about to take a shot, perfectly still in the way the Winter Soldier used to be before bursting into violence.
But they resolve it, & Steve resolves his wtf-to-wear dilemma...
Saying that Steve Rogers is good-looking is very much like saying “Natasha is badass” or “Bucky’s been working through some emotional problems lately”; it’s such an inadequate description that it’s almost comical in its understatement.
Then they’re ready to head out.Amazing to realise this was written soon after CA:TWS was released, before Ultron, Civil War, Infinity War, and long before FATWS.
This fic is pretty much JUST interactions between Sam & Bucky (with little interruptions by Steve’s fashion show). But when the author wrote it, their only on-screen interactions had been a couple of fights, and they weren’t even primarily fighting with each other at that, let alone talking. Yet their relationship here reads totally true to character when reading it for the first time a decade after it was written & having seen (but not necessarily liked) all the intervening movies/shows. -

WIP 8/14
Interesting post-TWS AU that diverges after the post-bridge fight wipe.
Switches between Steve’s POV & Bucky’s POV.
Bucky thinks of himself as an object (it), and of Steve as a handler.
Due to the timing of the divergence, it is not yet revealed that SHIELD is Hydra.
Bucky thinks everything is a trick that will lead to punishment when He (Pierce) finds out how badly he/it has been behaving for daring to ask questions and have opinions and comfort. but slowly begins to trust Steve & start remembering.
Now Bucky’s (and us readers too) just waiting for the other shoe to drop. -

So good!
All Steve’s trauma that he’s been holding in and hiding for so long coming out where it has to be acknowledged (first by us, and then by Steve and the others) and dealt with.
And getting made worse by SHIELDRA.
And TONY of all people (eventually) being in a position to first notice and then help, thanks to his having experienced (and had help recovering from) his own PTSD.
It’s so (painfully) lovely seeing them be reluctantly vulnerable with each other & start to build a friendship. (Not a snowman! Definitely not a snowman!) -

Fantastic escalating series of feral-cat-in-a-suit Quinn & exasperated, put upon Elliot who can’t NOT feed him (or others).
Their voices are so clear & true & in character (even tho canon Quinn has very little screen time).
Brewpub post-Ls5 setting.
OT3, Eliot & Quinn friendship, it just takes Eliot (but not anyone else) a hilariously long time to comprehend this.
