Summary
There’s something to be said about the after.
Truthfully, there’s a lot to be said about the after, but Eddie stopped trying to find the right words months ago. None of them ever really fit; just letters in an echo chamber, bouncing toneless and discordant. Just noise for the sake of, and isn’t it funny? Isn’t it funny that Eddie sees more of himself in the after than he did in the during? In the before? Isn’t it funny that he’s never felt more himself than he does standing here, on the precipice of utter ruin?

Summary
Somewhere in the trailer, the phone rings.
He lets it.
It rings again.
And again.
And fucking again, and he drags himself out of bed with a string of muffled curses, curving an arm around his stomach and hobbling into the kitchen, yanking the phone off the receiver.
“Fucking what?!” He snarls, and for one too-long moment, there’s silence.
And then–
“Is that how you greet everybody?”
Eddie freezes. Pulls the phone away from his body to stare at it, like it’ll make more sense if he can see it. Tucks it cautiously back against his ear.
“Harrington?”

Or, after the events of s4, the world is saved and the boys are quarantined in their homes. To stave off the loneliness and boredom, they start talking to each other over the phone.

Summary
“Fucking– goddamn– shit,” Sam snarls, and Andrew slips into the kitchen, studying the scene in front of him.
Sam’s knuckles are bloody.
“Sam–” Andrew starts, careful but not cautious. He only makes it a step closer before Sam’s voice cuts through the air, ragged and sharp.
“Don’t,” he snaps. The tension in his body bleeds into defeat, guilt, and he thunks his forehead gently against the refrigerator door. “Don’t,” he repeats, steadier. “You’ll get glass in your feet, Blur.”

Summary
Panic rockets through him, sets his heart beating so fast he’s dizzy with it, and he fumbles and yanks and shoves until Steve’s tumbling off the bed, tumbling away and the arms trapping Eddie are gone but he’s just- everything-
It’s too much, too much, the clothes on his back and the blankets around his hips and he tears at his collar; tries and tries and tries to get himself some fucking air, some fucking space, but his limbs aren’t working and his hands aren’t cooperating and he can’t-
He can’t-
He’s on his back.
He’s on his back and there’s a heavy weight on his thighs, his hips, his chest. There’s a hand around his throat, not squeezing, just holding, and fingers tangled with his, pressing him into the bed, pinning him in place and Eddie goes limp like a prey animal that’s been caught and breathes.

“I’m sorry,” he tries to say. The darkness is heavier, now. Oppressive. His body won’t move, his lungs won’t fill, there is blood in his throat and he is dying. He is dying.
I wish I could stop this, he thinks as he fades, as the world around him slips into nothingness and he does, too. I wish I could save you. I wish I had been enough. I wish–
A guitar wails, drums pound, and Eddie is alive.
He jolts upright with a gasp that feels more like a sob, adrenaline thrumming through his veins, heart beating erratically in his ears.
Something is tangled around his ankles, pinning him, trapping him and he kicks desperately, freeing his legs and throwing himself backwards. He hits a wall– he hits a wall, he hits a wall– and squeezes his eyes shut, waiting for teeth and ripping and pain, but–
“Ed!” Wayne calls from…somewhere, voice cutting cleanly through the panic fogging his brain. “Turn that noise down ‘fore you wake up the whole neighborhood!”

Or, Eddie dies in 1986.
In 1981, he wakes up. And this time, no one is dying.

“You’re stubborn and a hothead. You’re impossible to work with and you’re stuck in the past. Nancy said you’d be hard work but this is fucking ridiculous. I’m here to do a job. You won’t let me change or even suggest anything.”
“Not true. I did change the turmeric for saffron.”
“Yeah and you’re about this close to jumping off a bridge before admitting that it actually does taste better.”
Steve could strangle him.
Because yes. The saffron does taste better. The saffron tastes so much better and the dish now makes Steve’s tastebuds soar and his eyes water and the only thing worse than admitting Eddie is correct right now, is admitting that that dish is miles fucking better since Eddie puts his hands on it.
And Steve finds himself wondering for a split fucking moment in between the rage he’s feeling, if everything is better with Eddie’s hands on it.
