The one time a trophy bull elk wandered into her sights, she had watched it as though in slow motion. It moved with a gentleness that seemed impossible for something so large. Frost silvered its thick winter coat, the tiny crystals glittering in the pale morning light. It raised its head and looked straight at her with those dark, sinless eyes, then lowered its head again to graze. It was doing exactly what it was born to do, blissfully unaware of the ill-intentioned rifles trained on it.
